CEL keeps coming on and off.

My CEL keeps coming on occasionally and then off. I have an uncle that's a mechanic but I took it to his shop and when I got there the dang light went off. He plugged in his OBDII reader but it came out with "no data". I have the bad habit off letting the fuel level go real low so he suggested that that was what was causing it. That was last week. Today it came on and I have a 1/4 tank of gas so what can be causing it? It's only got 28,500 miles.

There's a lot of things that cause a CEL, the only thing you can really do is get the code pulled...

Go out and buy a OBDII Scanner or borrow it from your uncle for a week or so if he doesnt mind.

We were able to pull a code with a different OBDII reader. Actually a cheaper one than the one my uncle has, it mentioned something about bank 2. I forgot, but I think I'm going to have to take it back to his shop. He has this $16,000 Snap-On computer that reads just about anything, the crappy part is that he has to update the software, it only goes up to 2004 vehicles.

Unfortunately bank 2 can apply to many things, you need to get the exact code, and from there we can help.

Ok guys, I got the codes that the scanner is reading, P0171 and P0174, it says that system too lean on bank 1 and bank 2. What can cause this?

Many things:

If the light goes back off itself, it means it's only seeing it lean at certain times, my guess is a problem with the intake (not on securely, etc)

What exactly is your "custom intake"?
