Crazy Ferrari/Porsche crash

You can find the whole story here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsuya_Ota

They both survive, but they ended up suing the track. The guy that pulls him out and stopped the fire was another driver. The track safety crew never showed up.

Wow that was crazy. In the second one they said he died. Looked real lively to me. Just goes to show you how well the Porsche and the Ferrari is made. Even though the cars were trashed they still had there lives.

There are two things to consider: Assumed risk (drivers know they could get hurt or die) and negligence (on the part of the track).... this is negligence.

Gross negligence deserves being sued. No safety crew showed up for 90 seconds to put out the fire. But like most cases, he sued for a lot, and was only awarded a portion later.

I think 800,000 for that kind of negligence isn't quite suffcient enough.

The point of punitive damages awarded to the driver is to make a point to the community, that better measures should be taken at a RACE TRACK and that better safety standards need to be considered or more strictly implemented. If you are going to run a track, you need to take care of the customers on that track.

He's lucky he isn't dead, and it's not even because of the track officials, it's because another racer helped him first. 800,000 is a small price for the nightmares, pain and suffering from 800° degree burns he had to heal over the next year or so.
