Shifter tip bushing
Anyone that has replaced a shifter knows the difficulty in removing the shifter tip bushing. I have stumbled upon an easy way to removed it.
This is a pic of a paint can opener. If you buy paint at Loews or Home Depot, you get one of these tools for free.
If you use the "Loop" end like you use a beer bottle opener, it will pop right off.
This fits better than a standard bottle opener. If you do it slowly, you can get the tip off without damaging it.

How often do these bad boys need to be replaced(do they need to be replaced at all)? They seem like they'd be a wear item. I've probably got 35-40K on the one from my TRD SS. And can we just get them at the dealer?

I have pulled a lot of shifters the past few months. Some are tore up and some look pristine. When you shifter gets sloppy, it's time to check it.

When you talk about slop, you're talking about amount of play while the truck is in gear correct?

Yes. It may also get noiser. The TRD SS can easily be pulled out in 20 minutes to check the tip.
