Sorry to bump an old thread but on Toyota's site it says the recommended gas type is "87 (research octane 91) or better."

Does this mean 87 octane is fine or 91 octane? I've read differing views and before I fill my truck up I want to know. Bout time to fill 'er up so I need to know soon.

87 on a N/A truck. That's the best because of our compression ratio. No need to run 91.

U will actually pick up a few ponies and TQ if u run 91. Also when ever I ran 87 I would get some knock here and there so I always used 91 for that reason.

On a stock truck? Have yet to ever hear of knock coming from these motors when running 87 N/A

87 is what I figured for the N/A version. Usually premium is designed for FI vehicles. Hence why I'm staying N/A. I just left the turbo sedan world. Good riddance.

Help with Trans and Diff fluids

Hi all I am confused. I need to service my Trans and Diff. My X is an 08. I am reading Amsoil and Red line are good. OK what wt for each and do some of the diff oils come with LDS and some not. I'm reading that some oils come with it and some do not. I would opt for the one that does if thats the case.

For trans please tell me exactly what I need. Type and wt

For Diff please tell me exactly what I need. Type and wt and do I need LDS or does it come included in some of the gear oil and not others. Sorry to ask but some of the replys make no sense to me.

Basically you need MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil in your transmission, and 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil in your diff.

Do not get these two confused because the GL-5 oil has "friction modifiers" that keep the clutch discs in your LSD from grabbing, but they may be too slippery for the syncros in your transmission and give you shifting problems. The GL-4, on the other hand, doesn't have the friction modifiers for your LSD, so you'll feel/hear your LSD constantly locking & releasing when you're driving around turns. That will drive you crazy.

Redline GL-5 oil doesn't require anything else to be added to the diff fluid. It's all you need. If you decide to go with Mobile One gear oil, you'll need to also add a tube of LSD lube to their gear oil.

Haven't used Amsoil lubricants, so I can't specifically comment on their products. They sell both GL-4 & GL-5 oils, but their vehicle recommendations are too confusing. Don't understand why they recommend both GL-4 and GL-5 lubes for the transmission. Guess that's why I stick with Redline Synthetic lubricants.

how come my truck always fills up at 18gals even when almost dry empty? :dontknow:

What about engine oil? Has anyone switched over to Royal Purple Full synthetic? I am wondering befor I make the switch. :hmmmm2:
And I always use 91 Octane. Higher octane means hotter burning with in turn means less carbon build up. I've ran premium from the first day I got my x, nearly three years ago.:top:
