Well i want to first off thank Mark Gadget and Jason for their help and advice during my whole ordeal and for being discreat.....But here it is....

I noticed after a trip to Cali my truck was running real funky so i made the decition to tow it home from cali to texas. got it home ripped all my Mods off my truck and drove the truck and all seemed well. But after i drove to North Carolina and made it there no problems and started my 1000+ mile drive home. i made it about halfway and the truck started to run bad and i got a CEL. got the code and researched it it ended up being the #6 cyl misfiring. well i made the call to get it home. stocked up on oil. set cruise control around 70 mph and got my baby home. once i got home truck would not stop misfiring. I took it to Toyota and played the idiot role and 2 weeks later i have a new short block new valve seals oil pump and a few other things 100% covered under warrenty. What ended up happening was the #6 ringland broke scored up the cyld wall and from what the tech said the oil pan was filled with metal shavings.

I wish i could of got pics but the motor was already crated up when i got there. But i am back and running again so YAY!!

Glad to hear you got everything taken care of and you're back up and running again.

You still going to run the turbo, or you have other plans now?

You have to realize that Toyota does monitor these forums. Posting something like I blew my engine and I am taking off my mods and going to XX Toyota dealer to get it warrantied, might just cause some problems.

So, sometimes it is best to lay low if you are going to do the warranty thing.

THEN, share the experience so that others can benefit.

Just an idea....

Not to jack or anything but we all know that you gotta pay to play. and if we throw enough boost on it something is gonna break. Unfortunately it seems to be the turbo guys that are doing it. the urd guys are linear, the trd guys are down bottom, and the turbo guys are throwing it all in the upper mid range. It makes sense that higher rpms and a sudden increase of boost aren't good.

I'm glad he was able to get it home and take everything off and get a new motor for free, unlike the majority of us that have had to pay for our tranny's. Score one for XRU.

And Werty I'm 0014, twice as smart and twice as dangerous as 007.

Sound like the rear two cylinder (#5 & 6) are the one with most problem. I too, had oiling problem, end up wiping out rod bearing and score up the cylinder walls . . . on #5 & 6 cylinder.

Glad to hear your situation turn out in your favor. :top:
How much was the tow bill home?

Lots of TQ at low RPM will kill a weak motor very quickly my friend lol - Since TRD seems to be the down low TQ master (380 ft-lbs below 2500 RPMs lol) and since there are a lot of TRDs out there with no issues id say these issues are more tune & heat related.

That is the primary reason of our good old pal NITROUS DESTRUCTION and why we spray at a higher RPM (where the engine takes smaller bites)....

Think about how many people pop an engine right off the line at too low of an engine speed with an instant power adder such as nitrous...

These eutectic pistons are very brittle & vulnerable to excessive heat, you can not afford a bad tune - it will cost a lot.

Id say Cylinder 6 is the most common and probably the most vulnerable to knock so its the first to go.

There have been many others to break other cylinder ring lands first as well though.

When you tune with eutectic pistons you have to be VERY careful - they can NOT take a beating like a forged piston can - knock needs to be avoided totally the best you can.

Under high load it doesn't take a lot of knock to break something (a ring land).

If you choose to dance on that edge you must be VERY cautious of the conditions you run in, the fuel you fill up on, the gear your driving in, coolant temperature, heatsoak, and the like.

In the search for power we lean the mixture out and start cranking up the advance - this creates a lot more heat / pressure further pushing the boundaries of the pump fuel octane rating and a lot more detonation risk as a result.

You weaken these pistons with excessive heat over time and they break, or you take care of them in a few swift blows with some very bad knock (or both).

Its not just the 1GR, just the nature of the beast.

Yes Doug we know that you know more than us. I was just speaking in general. Congrats to Tyler for getting a free engine.

That wasn't the intention brother.

Its not power that is breaking these engines as you stated generally (a roots blower would certainly do that), its knock & heat.

Its what is reeking havoc on the late model Subarus recently as well (even stock ones).

I was making that clear to make everyone more cautious of how they tune and drive their expensive investment, not challenging your knowledge or anyone elses.

My long winded responses are just an attempt to save someone else a very large headache and very large bill; make them think more about their tune and their actions so they can continue to have fun!

Not everyone will be as lucky as lamecargo.

Don't take things personally in regards to that.

There are a handful of members on this board that go out of their way and spend the time to make very detailed responses; keeping to themselves wouldn't benefit this community.
