hey all, so as the title states the stock radio sucks. i really dont want to change the stock head unit so im thinking of replacing the stock speakers to try to get a little more volume and crisper sound. will this work or does the stock unit not put out enough power. thanks and im hoping im not the only one who wants to keep the radio stock. thanks!

it can work, the stock speakers are not that good, if you do i would look for an efficient speaker, and you could also do some dampening work to try and make the car sound better, there is also the option to do a nice loc and add an amp for the new speakers.

Put out for a nice head unit. they're all kinds of kits on ebay for the tacoma that looks real good. the head unit makes a big difference.

Go aftermarket. Stock radio is real low watts per channel, aftermarket have around 70 watts per channel.

im hoping that you can hook up an amp to the factory headunit and if so, that and the speakers may be the way to go, as thats kind of what I want to do myself.

I just changed to a double din DVD radio from my stocker. I had my JL sub and amp hooked up to the stock radio with a LOC and it worked fine so you should be able to run a 4channel amp with some upgraded door speakers and tweeters and it should sound better.

But as previously said you don't get alot of wattage out of the factory unit so you won't get clear crisp sound coming out of the highs as you would with an aftermarket radio.

And Donny I still have my LOC if you want it.

I hear Boston Acoustics is the next best thing to Bose. Any ideas?

I'm not sure about the lower end Boston's but the competition series require lots of power for them to sound right. I used to run 6 1/2 components for competitions and need about 150 per side for them to get their full potential. Bose for car audio is the suck. Boston's are right up there with MB Quart, just depends what kind of tunes you prefer to listen to.

if you dont want to change it out buy better speakers and amp then...
IMO i got a pioneer indash and the speakers sounded wayyyy better. my friends ask me what kind of speakers do i have because there nice and crisp. in the long run it saved me money by not buying spekers and an amp...

'05 SWB XR here. The stock head unit lacked a lot. It would "seek" and lock on stations that weren't there. No AUX input. No real features of any kind.

I replaced it for a 2-DIN JVC KW-ADV-794. The swap would have taken 20 minutes. But I opted to wet-sand, paint, and matte-coat all the components.
