Just make sure you try it on lights with the sensor on top...

Well, every light I came to changed when I got up to it. I guess since I was the only one at the intersection the sensor picked me up. So I would say it didn't work. Someone should try this in the middle of the day with lots of cars at the intersection.

ive heard about ppl putting these on motorcycles and stuff, i always thought it was real

There is a remote that ambulances and things use to turn the lights. I dont know how well a TV Remote would work but they actually make remotes specifically designed to speed up the light cycle so an emergency vehicle can pass through.

Yes these do exist, and for the sole purpose you mention. HOWEVER, you cannot do this with a consumer IR remote, that video is not accurate, and the code is NOT 9-1-1, it was a funny video though. You can create a device that once properly configured and powered will work, but good luck, if your caught using such a device you are subject to a hefty fine, and more (in my state). Just wait for the damn light, look both ways and go. In the video, if you watch after using the fake remote, someone blows through the red light from the right, so it wouldn't have stopped them, and you might be dead! or worse!

I agree with hack on this one.
I also had heard that the "beam" used by ambulances/police/firetrucks is located in their lights bar..
