Ok first off is transmission shaft the correct term?

Got tired of waiting for the mythical new TOB design and took my truck in for a throwout bearing. I expected some signs of wear but was shocked by how heavily the transmission shaft was worn!:frown: Granted I am not a mechanic but that much wear in 60k miles...

Anyone have a pic to compare mine against?

That is exactly what mine looked like when I had to replace my transmission. They said it was because of a bent fork. Ill try and find a picture but it was identical. Mine was around 60,000. I'm at 72,000 now and its time for a new one again! This time toyota is going to pay for it though!

Good lord 4 bearings!!! What is the symptom of all these bearing issues people are having, I have 60k on my truck with no issues. Doesn't look so bad to me, granted i'm an acura tech so thats what i can compare it to

Input shaft has an aluminum sleeve. What you cant tell is besides all the scratches there are probably grooves that around the shaft which catch the T/O bearing.

DD

Yea there was a distinct groove on the front of the shaft. Since this was covered under the part warranty an OE TOB had to go back on. My hope is the new TOB will out when this one fails in 5-7k miles. Risk atm is they are replacing the original clutch and flywheel with a CC stage III kit. That choice might come back to haunt me with a warranty denial. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Dude you need to put that fix on. I talk to the dealer and they are going to put mine in for free during the new install because they understand this is a huge problem. If you don't put a sleeve on its going to wear out faster then last time and it will wear your clutch out even faster because its not engaging correctly. I wore out my new clutch is 1,500 miles on mine with new T/o and the shaft looking like that. If it was me I would tell them to hold off and put that sleeve on at least.

eh it's too late. I took those pics just a few hours ago before the tech installed a new TOB. They would not agree to install a TSK as the TOB was being replaced under a parts warranty. Hopefully the decision to install a new clutch does not come back to haunt me thru premature wear. It was not something I thought about ahead of time.

I am just too damn tired and annoyed at hearing my truck squeal all the bloody time and promises of a fix just around the corner. I'll find out one way or another in a few months.

If you ask me, it sounds like it's time to sell the truck while it's running good. Because we all know it is most likely going to come back. That's just what I would do if I were in this position. It would tick me off to have a vehicle with the same problem over and over because the manufacturer can not figure out a proper fix and to back up customers.

Actually urs doesn't look nearly as bad as mine did. Of course I found mine to look worse then urs when installing my new Stage III clutch and lite FW. At this time no one even knew about the sleeve repair kit. Later on took it to the stealer to have them look at it and they flat out refused to even look at it because I didn't have antoyota clutch in it anymore.

I hope u have more luck then me

The service adviser left not one but two notes on the paperwork about how it was my request to replace the TOB and replaced the OE clutch assembly with an aftermarket performance clutch.

Which has me thinking I will DENIED next time around.

It would seem to me that FOUR tob's should be a warning sign to the service techs that something beyond the tob is the issue. Bent forks, bent fork mounts, improperly machined shaft nose, improperly seated slave cylinder, etc ... I'm honestly surprised that they're not going through the check list of other things that could be wrong beyond just the tob.

I took my truck into Desert Toyota (I think the same place you went to) a few years back because of a leaking pinion seal. At the end of all of it, the lost three pinion seals and the truck never left their lot. They wound up replacing the whole rear end. Been leak free and problem free ever since ...

If this new tob blow's up on you and Desert denies your warranty claim, don't fret, we'll just hold ourselves a good ol' fashioned clutch party ... round up a few folk and dive right on in :top:
