If it runs, put on some new tires and a seat. Run some Techron through it and clean it up.

If anything doesn't look too bad hopefully she runs, get a new seat and at lthe very least you could flip it for some profit

Depends if they actually need rebuilt or just cleaned. Just as a reference I had pulled off a carb block off a '78 kz650 that I restored and had the carbs rebuilt. That included new seals, orings, gaskets, sync'd and bench vac tested. The total on that was $180 and they came out better than new. So if you can do that, new seat, new tires, and cost of bike, you might be into it for under say $1200. Good deal.

Yamaha makes an excellent carb cleaner. I mix it 50/50 with gas and run it through the carbs using an IV bottle. Do not put it in the gas tank. If you have carbs that are just a little gummy, it will clean them up without a tear down.

The bike will not want to run, but if you can get some juice in the jets/needles it does wonders.

$500 aint bad...those were decent bikes back in the day and I don't think they've changed much, so parts should be cheap and abundant. Check e-bay for a carb rebuild kit, or whole new carbs if you're unsure about doin that yourself. Just be advised that 30k on a bike is equal to probably 150k (or more) on a car. Most guys have either blown or rebuilt their motors @ 30k but I've seen certain bikes go to 50k without major issues. Try to atleast turn it over just to make sure she's not locked up.
