Hey guys, I'm looking for a shop that has done plenty of mechanical work with 1GR-FE motors in my area (Hampton Roads/757). I'm going to make the assumption that it'll prob be more of a shop that works with offroaders since those are more common with the Tacomas and FJs.

Any shop recommendations from the XR Underground regulars?

If anyone is wondering, my motor dosn't start and most likely has a broken timing chain since I'm getting 0 compression after a compression test.

Take off the passenger side cam cover and you will be able to look at the main timing chain. Then turn the crank by hand and see if it is turning or not.

For me, that would be the first timing chain that i had ever heard of braking on a 1gr. What Gadget said, or the timing chain inspection cover. Is is on the passenger side of the timing cover, not to far under the valve cover. Four ten mm bolts hold it on. :top:

More 1GR get work on in Torspd garage than anywhere else on XR-U.

I've seen one break on a tacoma before. I was able to lift the chain up through the oil fill neck with a magnet.

I am actually quite surprised that the chain in my used engine didn't have any issues. Being how poorly it was taken care of by the previous

Yeah priority toyota talk to Kenyan. It is a stealership, but you may have better luck then doing it yourself.... specially if you lack experience knowhow or knowledge for the job. This joint is off Greenbrier, you can google it.

I finally had time to pull off the valve cover. Upon research, these engines are interference engines, so theres a good chance a valve(s) are/is bent. I'm pissed an engine with only 40k miles would do this. I've put less than 3000 miles on this truck since I bought it last summer.

That really sucks.

Nice an clean on the inside. Real shame.

Why did it happen? The world may never know. This is why brand new vehicles come with a warranty.

Lets hope for the best and your valves are fine.

If you need a replacement engine try www.lowmileageengines.com.

Thanks, i'll check out the site if i need a new motor.

I picked up a BMW 5 series as a temp replacement for the X-R and been working on the X-R slowly.
I took the front cover off and it appears someone has been in the motor before from residule RTV and half assed the installation. Several areas are missing bolts and such on the front end- also half assed.

Looking forward to getting it up and running again with everything properly installed without cutting any corners!

I figured out what caused the chain to break.

There was a foreign object in the valve cover. It is a metal pin. I know for sure this was the the result of this foreign object because it appears this pin was caught between the cam lobe and where the lobe contacts the valve/lifter. The distance between the two scorch marks on the pin suggest this. Also the cam lobe is missing a chunk of surface metal from the contact!! That added resistance prob is enough to break the chain.

Ridiculous.

That's not uncommon. The BMW M88/S38 engines have had a similar problem. Their synthetic chain followers get old & brittle over the years & break, sometimes falling into the chain. Usually when it falls between the chain and the gear (cog), the chain snaps. That little accident = a $12K+ repair job.

Sucks, and one reason why you always ensure you don't drop anything into that area...wonder if the previous owner was doing some work/modifications & dropped something into that area, and didn't care to find it before putting it back together. Since you stated there were missing screws/bolts, it sounds like whoever did the previous work was sloppy/careless.
