So the past two months I've been dealing with a herniated disc in my neck between c5 and c6 and it hurts like hell. I've already gotten three cervical steroid injections in my spine and will be getting a fourth tomorrow and the pain is still here. I went two days ago and bought an inversion table to help with the pain. Has anyone else had this problem?? If so what was the fix? I know I can have surgery but the neurosurgeon says that's the last resort. The options he gave me are the injections, chiropractor, physical therapy and surgery.

Yup that's it n also btw get ready for the weight gain.... I had 3 shots n gained 20lbs. I opted out of surgery cuz I didn't want to get all scared up n have tissue damage as well... I just don't believe that once they cut through it heals back up right.

If you opt for surgery, check out Laser Spine Institue. Heard a lot of good things about it.

Yep, go LASER if you have to get cut.

I have several bad discs and broke my neck early on doing Judo. I pretty much just live with it. Some days it is tough. Life time of SWAT, car crashes, skydiving, Judo and so on does take its toll.

Injections are not a good thing and can interfere with healing, but sometimes are needed to calm down nerves that are causing muscles to pull that should not be and let things line back up. From what I see they are way over done.

I have had good luck with chiropractic treatments, but that is not for all cases.

From what I have always seen with friends and stuff that have issues, shots are givin for a quick buck, and mostly don't do anything or if they do the issue just comes back.

Have you tried just getting a second opinion from another doc? (WEB MD and XRU don't count)

Damn right they are a quick buck...$125 each and already got three.

I'm getting one more tomorrow and if it doesn't help I will try a chiropractor and/or physical therapy. I talked to three different docs and they said the injections are a good thing to get to try and get rid of the pain. But I'm starting to look forward to the surgery if I need to get it

if all of them agree you need surgery and all show you where and stuff, I suggest you do it.

Doctors IMO don't get enough schooling on alternative treatments. I would try the table even a pilates ball face down for 15 mins helped my father with back and neck issues. He spent thousands at chiropractor and injections, till one suggested this. He swears it helped more.

The table helps a lot. I feel better for a while after I get off then the pain slowly comes back. I just need to keep the weight off my neck for as long as possible I guess to let it heal on its own. Hopefully it won't take forever to do so

Let me jump in here since therapy is what pays my bills.....
Sorry to hear about the injury especially in c5-c6 region as this is where nerves branch off to upper extermeties and is generally one of the worse places you can have this happen in regards to affecting daily function. How did the injury occur? Describe pain and pain level? Any muscle spasms and if so when/where? Taking any meds for pain or spasms? What kind of doctor are you seeing for this? You need a good dr in the correct field to be seeing you and overseeing this. Never be afraid to get a second or even third opinion. Buying the inversion table was not a bad move but was not a great move either. As you stated min relief short period of time. You can do better with cervical brace/support for less money. You need something to relieve weight of head/neck to avoid any flair ups or irritation in area. I recommend finding a good physical therapist(PT), maybe even a good liscensed massage and bodywork therapist(LMBT), and something other than shots may benefit you. Also keep activity to a min that has and bumps/sudden movement as this will make worse. The path you are on now is leading you to surgery which should not be brought up at this point.

It just started to hurt out of nowhere. I didn't have any trauma or anything. The pain was faint to start off then over time just became steady. It feels tight or like I pulled something. It goes from my neck to my right shoulder down to my elbow mainly on the front of my arm. Most of the time it hurts a lot where my arm meets my shoulder. No spasms at all. The pain is only on the right side and has never traveled to the left at all. Yeah I was taking some pain mess and naproxen even lortabs but no help at all.

I saw my family doc who ordered the MRI then went to a neurosurgeon who recommended the injections as a first step. I'm getting the injections at a "headache and pain" center that specializes in brain and spinal injuries.

Sounds good so far. Shots you are getting are only a bandaide fix though and for the money you may get longer lasting results seeing a LMBT and/or PT. Have them recommend certain places for PT and massage in your area. Also try to find good references by word of mouth in your area. In my area all dr recommend PT within their own network however they may not have best PT's. Ask around to find a common place that comes up and and go with that. Your dr may not have any recommendations for a massage therapist. In this case try to find a doctor of osteopathy (DO)if any in your area.

This is really crappy, I know how you feel. I was in a car accident and my neck was always tight, and
after riding in a car for more then 20 min I'd have to hold my head up from pain/strain. Luckily
at my work, there is a sports physical therapy center. They treated me for whip lash, and spinal issues.
Maybe like me you might have other issues where your shoulder or back is straining your trap muscles
causing your neck to BULDGE out? For me this was sort of the case, there's always a reason something is
occurring with your body. Injections are all well and good, but don' solve the i ssue. What really helps is
physical therapy. Once you go get treatment (it may be painful at first) the symptoms may improve. If they don't and you're consistent with your therapy then surgery may be the answer (laser).
