So, there I was getting a couple things from AutoZone to fix little problems with my X that have been bugging me. I figured while I'm here I'll see how much a shift lever will run me because the rubber piece that bonds the 2 separate pieces together wore out/broke. So now my shift knob and the part covered by the boot rotate freely by hand, just a little annoying. Anyway I went back to get my stuff and got to the counter. The guy asked is that everything? I said I would like to see how much a shift lever is for a 2005Tacoma. So he did his thing on the computer, before he asked I said yes it's standard, and it's the XRunner model. Ok, back to the computer, after standing there awkwardly for about 5 minutes, he asked it's automatic right? I said no it's standard. You know with a clutch. Then he asked what again I needed I said again, a shift lever. The thing that comes out of the transmission that you select your gears with. He said ok. Another awkward standing and looking around for a couple minutes and he finally says I don't know what you're talking about. So I told him I will go elsewhere, paid for my stuff and left.

Now what I'm trying to figure out is how someone is too dumb to know what I'm talking about if they work at an auto parts store. Iknow not everyone may not call it a shift lever, but holy hell I don't know how I could've described it any better lol.

Haha I've run into this same problem buying parts before for various vehicles. You would think that you have to have some kind of general knowledge of auto parts to work at an auto parts store. It's makes me question the qualifications for getting the position in the first place haha

I wouldn't buy car parts from Autozone. Just fluids, filters, spark plugs, cleaning supplies. That guy did you a favor. Might be time for a Coupe ss.

Autozone. Hires anyone lol you don't have to have knowledge. And on another note I got the coupe 8 1/2 shifter it's great. Well worth the money probably cheaper than a replacement at an auto parts store and won't fall apart again

Just get a shifter from coupe, much more solid, shorter throws and won't wear out like every one of the factory ones.

Haha I never usually do get parts from there. I just wanted to see a round about price. I've never heard of a coupe s/s, does the shift knob sit lower than stock?

Yeah the bushing inside mine wore out and I followed his write up and did mine myself and it wasn't bad at all, the only things I didn't have were the epoxy and the gun to mix it.

Yahh same here but I work on aircraft so I can probably find something to use as the epoxy for free.

Next time you can always ask to see his computer screen, and try to walk him through the steps to arrive at the correct page.

But then he wouldn't be about to make himself an awesome coupe shifter lol

Very true sir ;) lol I think I might do that this weekend actually.

Sweet deal. Do you have a short shifter on your truck? A coupe shifter with a short shift kit like the one from URD is an awesome thing. I can flick my wrist an run it through all the gears.

One word of advice though, the shorter you make your shift throws, the more bawls you have to put into getting it into reverse. It's not bad though, I made my shifter 8 1/2 inches (which is the shortest coupe makes them) and even with the URD short shift kit on top of that, it just takes a little slap to get it into reverse.

Yahh I got a URD short shifter too. I was probably going to go with 8.5 as well cause I like my throws really stiff.

I worked for VatoZone for 9 months... I have no mechanical back ground that I could put down on my resume other than being a fleet manager for a local police department that required me doing minor repairs to keep police cars in the fleet (headlights/tail lights, battery, spot light, some wiring etc...).

It all depends on the store manager, She was relatively reluctant and gave me a set of questions she came up with herself about cars... Like GM using dexcool coolant, How to change brakes, naming a few parts etc... But it was still just very easy and luckily all the people in my store knew what they were talking about... But our neighboring stores were quite sad, They would sometimes call us to ask us a simple question and when they would help at our store or we help at there's it would sometimes get imbarassing.

It is a joke for Autozone to advertise "expert advice", They do have a training class but they will only send 2 employees a year per store.

Customers can be pretty bad too... My favorite is when I had a customer come for I think an O2 sensor, He said it was a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser. I get him the part and he leaves... An hour or so later he comes back furious saying I don't know WTF i'm doing, Our parts are shit (true fact) and that it did not fit his PT Cruiser. Demanding a refund... But this time I watched him pull up... I ask if the part is for that silver hatchback he drove up in. He angrily says "YEAH!"... I calmly say "That's a Chevrolet HHR, Not a PT Cruiser". He gets even more pissed off exclaiming he knows what he F'ing drives, He bought it new etc... I just say ok, And go through the refunding process.

As he's leaving, I watch him walk to the rear hatch and look at the emblems where it has a Chevy emblem and says HHR and the trim level. He looks back up at the store, takes a step towards the store and quickly turns back around and into his car and takes off.

Had another customer ask for something for his 2001 Mustang GT... But it was a V6. I point that it has to be either a V8 GT or a base V6 and I don't want to get him the wrong part. He gets mad saying me and the computer is wrong, So I slyly change the cars configuration thing to Mustang V6 and get him the part...

Towards the end of my employment, When I've finally had enough of dimwitted angry customers, All of the BS upsells and micromanagement (Check out challenge has a quota [that fuel additive etc..], Those little grease packets has a quota, WITTDTJR [What it takes to do the job right, IE: You buy brake pads, i have to sell you rotors, brake cleaner, hand cleaner, rubber gloves, brake quiet etc...])... Anyways, When I had enough, A customer came in and was instantly pissed off at I don't know what. He came in, i asked if he needed help with anything, he said no and got what i think he wanted in 2 minutes and came to the counter... He yelled that we are just awful!, I just said... "Ok" he asked if I wanted to know why he says that... I said, "Nope, Some people will never be happy". He just walked out... Leaving his stuff behind.
