There are several people here who are or were "car guys" before "truck guys", How did you guys keep the romance alive with your X-Runner?

I got mine October 10th 2011 a few months after selling my 1994 BMW 540I, But before that I had a 03 TL Type-S, 2 90-91 Integra's that were moderately modified, a Porsche 944 and a beater Ford Explorer...

As it stands, I am very tired of my X-Runner and thinking back to before I got it I did hear predictions from my friends that I would get tired of it since I have not been known to ever give a truck a second glance.

My 1994 BMW 540I stock with only 18x8/18x.9.5 wheels handled a bit better than the X-Runner, Felt faster and got the same gas mileage and that wasn't just my driving too... It kept up in the mountains with the previous "norcal crew".

My X-Runner doesn't seem to do anything extremely well in stock form aside from reliability, It does everything alright... It does more things than a lot of cars can do but they usually excell at 1 thing where the X-Runner doesn't excell at anything but covers more things.

Handling is alright, Brakes suck, Power is alright, ride comfort sucks, steering feed back is alright (being generous), technology is non existent, road noise is alright, build quality is alright, materials are alright, Gas mileage sucks etc...

But she is pretty, I keep her looking good from cleaning every individual part under the hood to shampooing the seats and floor mats every other month. I get compliments a few times a week on it and questions about the body kit and always asked "is it fast".... It's been extremely reliable, I got it with a tick under 40K miles and it now has 100K miles and have only changed the spark plugs, oil every 6.5K miles (royal purple oil+RP filter) and a set of tires... Original clutch, TOB does make a squeek when it's cold, Brakes are going to be upgraded soon (better pads, SS lines, probably slotted rotors for bling [Only because I'm stuck with her until earliest this summer and the currents have began to squeel]), Tires will be replaced again soon and a speaker is giving me that blown rattle noise.

It's been weighing on my mind for a few months now, and I decided when it's paid off ($6K more to go) I will trade it in for something more suitable for me like an M3, M5, Genesis Coupe, 370Z, STI, Evo etc...

I use the back seats more than I use the bed... I miss refinement, I miss sitting low, I miss being able to make U turns, I miss driving in the rain without breaking a sweat...

How does or did everyone manage to still love these things?

I've never kept mine stock, constantly modding her and that has kept it alive for me. I can feel the end getting near BUT hopefully finally adding boost will keep the dream alive for a while longer...

If your Xrunner is less fun than a 20 year old 5 series you're modding it wrong.

Seems like you have made up your mind. You have to admit for a truck its just too hard to beat for looks and performance, but it doesn't sound like it will ever be the vehicle you are wanting. Let the hunt continue for the ride that suits your needs.

Are you seriously asking this question? I for one will not try to justify it for you. You're comparing a car to a truck. If you'd rather have a car get a car.

If you don't use it for the fun that excites you, then it is just another tool of life.

That is sad to hear.

I can tell you mine seems to get more fun the older it gets. Faster too....

When I got it, I had intentions of investing in a supercharger but at 100K miles now, I would rather not risk hurting the reliability aspect of it by boosting a high mileage engine... When I was tired of Honda's I just started modding as things broke (like... My radiator sprung a leak, so I put in a fluidyne radiator, clutch went out so I upgraded to a stage 2 etc...) which is what I will just do with this.

If your Xrunner is less fun than a 20 year old 5 series you're modding it wrong.

They were/are both stock (X-Runner does have a TRD intake, URD SS and DT headers)... I didn't say that the X-Runner was less fun per se but it is far less refined and it's handling/power characteristics are sub par in comparison to a old german sedan.

The X-Runner screams for the attention and it's certainly the more "interesting" and flamboyant one out of the pair but I prefer a vehicle that will perform without begging for the attention.

I'd rather keep it reliable and not put any unnecessary money into her anymore.

Seems like you have made up your mind. You have to admit for a truck its just too hard to beat for looks and performance, but it doesn't sound like it will ever be the vehicle you are wanting. Let the hunt continue for the ride that suits your needs.

In reality for a truck it is impossible to find all an x-runner can do in a single package with only the Ram SRT10, Ford Lightning and GMC Typhoon being the only sports trucks available on this side of the world... But they all handle like total crap, The X-Runner handles good but not fantastically. For what it is, It does great... But when looking at the price range (Let's say $15K) a G35, 350Z, E36 M3, E46 M3, E39 M5, S2000, Volvo S60R, WRX etc... Can be purchased and will out perform the X-Runner, The X-Runner does the same skid pad numbers as the G35/350Z but it doesn't have the same power in stock form and a smaller wheel base so it can take more narrow corners better.

I will admit, I probably will miss the thumb ups and disbelieved looks on peoples faces when I keep up with them or pass them on twisty roads because it is not expected of a truck... But thats only because it's a truck.

Are you seriously asking this question? I for one will not try to justify it for you. You're comparing a car to a truck. If you'd rather have a car get a car.

There's a reason I specified to the people who were into cars before trucks, I was asking how did they keep liking their trucks over time... Because I know people on here who have come from WRX STI's and other sporty cars.

But you kind of did answer my problem, It is ultimately a truck.

If you don't use it for the fun that excites you, then it is just another tool of life.

I have a few mountain roads in my backyard that I bring it through every so often... But for regular driving it has pretty bad road manners. I can't help but feel like the X-Runner was an after thought after Toyota made the current Tacoma.

That is sad to hear.

I can tell you mine seems to get more fun the older it gets. Faster too....

Lucky you, But you have so much toys at your disposal.

You are trying to compare a truck for a car? There's is now way that they will ever be close to the same, no matter how you slice it, the Xrunner is a pick up, there will always be more refinement in a car. The Xrunner is great because you get the functionality of a truck but for a car enthusiast they can get a little bit from both sides, sounds like you just need to get a car. Let's put it this way, I traded my original X for a turbo car and yes it was fast and fun but I flat out missed the X, for the reasons above along with being different than most, I do miss the horsepower a bit but would not go back, the X is phenomenal for what it is, best of luck to you, you need to do what will make you happy, not one any of us say!

Very eloquently put.

The X-Runner is indeed unusual and quirky, Maybe it'll be a case of "not knowing what you had until it's gone"... But for having nothing but cars for my 10 years with a license its definitely been the most reliable and aesthetically pleasing of the bunch.

At the time of purchase I had been on XRU for 2 years and we needed a truck, But we added an F150 that is actually quite refined(soft suspension, Comfy heated leather seats) but it doesn't like turning... We have a 2007 Chevy Impala that I often times drive when I need to go a far distance or drive in traffic. But every time I am stuck in the Impala for long periods of time I end up falling in love with the X-Runner all over again because the Impala is just a terrible car.

Maybe I need to drive it more often...

Look at my sig, I definetly don't need another truck but I have fallen in
Love with the X and regretted getting rid of it from day one but at the time I need a more family friendly vehicle, I love the spilt personality of the X, I was always a car until the X!

i used to have a jackson racing supercharged miata. best handling car in the world and by far extremely torquey fun.

and i wont lie, i do miss my miata from time to time. the x-runner will never compare to its handling and sheer fun.

i know exactly how you feel about missing a certain car.

i keep the x-runner bug alive by modding all the time. small things like painting interior trim. changing the stereo. dropping it and playing with the QA1 settings. also looking forward to plenty of other mods like BBKs, sway bars, new exhuast components like y pupe and new cat back, fuel pump and the SC that im saving for this year.

not to mention. if youre xrunner is clean, makes a nice noise, you always get complimented by others. any other car just sounds like a loud car. xrunner looks so aggressive, its meant to be loud.

Miata's are amazing little cars... Very understated by people that don't know anything about cars.

My X-Runner is fairly clean... It gets a lot of compliments, Even when surrounded by other X-Runners... For example, A member here used my truck to pick up his brother from work. His brothers friend complimented the truck... No mention of the other members truck. Another instance another member and I attended a fundraiser car show at a high school... At the gate to pay admission the guy said "Aw why'd you bring the truck?"... Where I got a "thats a sick as fluck truck". And when I have service done to it, The guys at the lube shop always leave it in front of the roll up doors with the hood open as if they are displaying when i'm inside signing/paying while when I bring the impala they park it in a parking spot behind the bushes (they always ask questions about it like what year is it, who made the body kit, what have i done to it, How much did i pay etc...) She is pretty, And when she's clean and I walk towards her from a distance it's quite staggering. And it's all stock... It's undoubtedly a pretty truck.

Same thing happens when I park next to torspd. Everyone is like supercharger ahhhh turbo....WTF!!!!!!!!!!! Then the light bulbs go off and I think why, why , why! The crowd slowly over takes his engine bay and I'm stuck standing there with a snow cone and a microfiber cloth. Usually ends with me throwing the snow cone and using the cloth to wipe away tears. Why must torspd live in houston!??!! If only he lived in San Diego....

Why are you having about a converstation where people give you ideas to rekindle the "romance" when all you do is dismess them? Then return with your own idea.

Sell the truck and move along, or find comfort in what you have. A rare vehicle that is in some way an extension of yourself. No one can make you enjoy it more than yourself.

Some of the ideas were good and I compromised them, That I'll upgrade what breaks as opposed to dumping more unnecessary money into it.

All of the good norcal people except a very few have moved on... There seems to be some people in this area that I'd rather not see. Sorry for not explaining that part in dismissing your suggestion.

The truck isn't quite suiting me all to well, I'm more of a Porsche 911 Turbo guy than a Ferrari 458 Italia guy... I can't sell it yet, I still owe money on it :(
