I've missed the Taco. Race car prep is worthy. Welcome back. Slap on some new turbos while you're in there. And give plenty of ideas to 1GRracer!

Hey Torspd! Been a while since we've last chatted haha, I've got a lot of catching up to do with everyone on here since it's been a while

My taco hasn't changed at all from my build thread, it's till boosting all day long and holding up strong without any hiccups *knock on wood*

I've started reading up on your thread as well, you've got a lot going for yourself too

I've got turbo's all ready to get installed, just need to get the diff completely rebuilt and same with the engine then were talking!

Tomei FTW!

Upgrading the front diff or going back to OEM?

Have you decided on the manufacturer of your internals, or are yours still fine?

Upgrading to an LSD front diff, there's been stories where people still blow a perfectly good front diff but it's usually the spider gears that literally blow apart and take out the oil pan with it. That's not gonna happen with me haha

I figured eagle rods and CP pistons will work just fine. Stock rods/pistons can handle the power since it has been proven but I don't wanna chance having a shitty tune then BAM goodbye engine! as well longevity will be sacraficed with stock piston/rods

There's a couple of pieces that I'm getting for then engine from tomei for example the baffle plate and orifices is a must for these engine because of oil starvation issues. The oil pump equals $$$ plus the price of the oversized oil pan more $$$. If it was a full on race car for track only then sure it would be a good idea but for street wise I don't think it's necessary

I've already ordered the Nismo oil pump for the larger clearances I'm going to run in the block bearings (better flowing pump over stock)

Time to take apart everything in the diff which included that smaller axle/shaft, bearings and seals. Got a hand from my old man on this one!

Before i went down south to the shop a good friend of mine already has the tomei baffle installed which he told me the drain back hole in the oil pan have to be enlarged as part of the instructions. I did just that but needed one hell of a long bit to get the far side of the hole since the drill would hit the side before the bit would go through

After the mod i left the next day to drop off my block and oil pan. Got news that the balancing required all of the rotating assembly which is pistons, rods, crankshaft, harmonic balancer and flywheel. Well shucks thats gonna have to wait for later until i get the pistons, rods and harmonic balancer!

* * * * *

Back at home with the one day trip. That amde for a long day driving in the taco. So back at home and at the car again.

Theres this charcoal canister in the engine bay which is used for emissions purposes which is getting deleted (EVERYONE gets rid of these)

So with the canister out already when i pulled the engine it was just lines left over. It was easy as snip, cut pull out haha

There is one issue though the canister see'e which is fuel vapors from the gas tank which is the line in the pic above. So snip and cut again half way down the frame of the car and bend it back into the frame.

So thats all I've got for now until i hear back from the shop with my block and oil pan. Still figuring out what to do with my head. Still have yet to order any pistons, rods or bearings. So next update might be in a couple of weeks or so

Well even after a couple weeks things are slowed down. Manage to work some OT for the upcoming bills I've got coming haha

So the block is still in the shop since they found my cylinders to be tapered and needed to be re-bored to next size. So 86.5mm pistons it is. They have ordered the CP pistons and Eagle Rods, soon to order ACL bearings. Shop is still waiting on mail to get my pistons in, but I did get to check out my beautiful con rods

On this weekend I got off from work and not working the OT, I dropped off my flywheel, my ATI Harmonic Dampener and crankshaft off for everything can get balanced

So now the shop pretty much has my entire bottom end and it's simply a waiting game now. So who knows when the next update on this build will be. Stay Tuned! :D

Well a nice 4 month wait and I finally got my block back, to bad I was in such a rush to get mounted and wrapped I nearly forgot to take a picture. I had a long day and drive so you guys will eventually see the block all done lol

The Oil Pan looks sooo fresh!

With that said got all my other parts (pistons, rods and bearings) just need to order a new set of ARP main bolts but there's still so much to do while I wait for them to come in the mail! Got the crankshaft back in there too!

Not a whole much of an update here, figured i would start tackling my front diff. Thanks to my old man for letting me bring my oil pan to his shop to make it easier to work on! i do say removing the outer races on the bearings inside was not very fun since they are in there pretty tightly

So first started off by installing the new crown gear and bearings on the new LSD diff. Old one is on the left, new one is right in picture

So give another 3-4 hours for putting the new outer races back in and putting new bearings on the pinion shaft and next thing you know we have everything together

It sure looks pretty but until i went to check my backlash thats when we started having issues…

Zero backlash in the teeth, bearings on the diff have wayy to much preload and the pinion shaft doest have enough pre-load. Great, so now ive gotta play with shims since the stock ones i kept from my old one never aligned the gears right nor put the right amount of pre-load on. So out came the front diff to start with getting the right pre-load on the pinion shaft then see how the gears mesh. This just became a long wait for shims..

Oh the joys of setting up the gears.... Did the new parts not come with shims?

Nope, which made me keep the ones I had from the old set up which clearly are wrong. Maybe this is why the other one stripped itself to pieces? who knows

Nismo didn't include any shims for their diff so I'm stuck getting a bit of a variety pack which might take a while to get with being a car from Japan lol

In the mean time the engine block parts should be coming by very soon

A bit of an update here now finally got around building my pistons

So first thing is first was to double check the work of the machine shop

20150116_144850_zpsfe0b45c6.jpg

Everything turned out well with the tolerances, thank goodness lol so next step is to determine ring gap. The pics pretty much the repeated steps i did until i got the right gap

Building Piston Time!!

20150117_171559_zpsea0cf1c8.jpg

Once there all together now time to set the piston rings according to their cylinder

20150117_174501_zpsbceac757.jpg

So putting the oil rings on when it came to the top compression ring i noticed the ring was getting stuck between the grooves. The side i grinding on made an edge making the one side "sticky" Simple fix with a small file

So thats as far as i can take it for i am still waiting on parts. In the mean time i finally got a plan with my head. Im gonna send out to a shop since i dont feel comfy doing my own porting lol So starting putting the cams and covers back on for shipping!

Just a minor update on how things are going (one month later)

1)Some parts ended up getting mixed up which is leading a further delay to get started on my block. Man that sucks since shipping takes forever for this car

2)Good side though my head is being built so i still have a 6 week prep time to finish up the block before the head arrives

3)My front diff has seriously been the death of me (feels like it anyway) with the stupid amounts of home made shims and then gears not meshing has driven me nuts weekend over weekend. That should be getting wrapped up withing the next couple weeks

Cheers

Damn. Overlooked last month's update. You are doing a very diligent job. Keep up the good work. :top:

Those rods look so stubby compared to ours in the 1GR. Lol.

Niiice, I've got nothing against them since I drove in one of my buddies that's boosted and it's simply ridiculous!

Thanks man! And yeah a 2.6 vs 4.0 I'm sure there is quite a difference haha

Not sure if I would go 167 in the Honda. Nice job on that engine. Are you weighing all the rods and pistons ?
