Hello! My name is Josh. I've been looking into purchasing a X-Runner used and I was wondering if there were any tips and tricks that you could provide. I'm currently driving a TSX manual transmission that was been a wonderful car but I really want a dependable sporty truck and I just want to make sure the X-Runner is just that. I've spent days on the forums making a check list of everything I need to check such as the squeaking of the bearings to the cracking of the fenders. My main concern is the transmission problems a lot of owners have been having. It seems to be mainly the 05-06 owners. I'm wondering if the 07s seem to have the same issue. The link below is the Taco I was looking at. My budget is no more than $15k. Any input would be great! Thank you for your time. :top:

The price is a bit high. I would start at 12k with that kind of mileage. Don't forget to ask for the car fax for that ride

Yes I definitely think so as well. The car fax is actually great. Great servicee records. No accidents. Thank you for your input!

My 07 trans was complete trash by 60k miles. But the transmission is the same from 05-up I believe.

But yes mainly check for the throwout bearing chirp, synchros in the trans (make a few high rpm shifts), creaking clutch pedal, excessive slop in the shifter, and the rock chips on the rear fender flares.

Dam really? Maybe I can use that as a negotiating tactic and swap out the tranny or maybe rebuild?

The transmissions are the same on every year X-Runner. A lot of us have small problems with them (chirping throw out bearing and bad syncros making high rpm shifts difficult in certain gears) I haven't experienced the chirping throw out bearing yet but there is a fix for that. As far as the engines go if you keep them under 8 psi of boost they last forever if regularly maintained. Also changing out your transmission fluid for amsoil or redline mt-90 helps smooth out the shifts a bit. I'm at 74000 miles running around 7 to 8 psi on a TRD supercharger so far with ZERO mechanical issues. Just regular oil changes and a wash every once and a while. Bodys in almost mint condition but I've only drove it 1 winter and avoid dirt roads as much as possible. For how impressive it is on the street it is the complete opposite off-road. The pros far out weigh the cons though when it comes to owning an X-Runner :blurock:

Another thing I noticed on the add your looking at is the poor mileage advertised. With the supercharger around 7 to 8 psi and full catless exhaust I average 20.2 mpg half city half highway driving :top:

Tommy that is a relief to hear! Did the super charger improve your MPG? Or was it always like that? What kinda scares me is all the TSBs I've read. The car is 15k over warranty so idk if the dealer would helps out in "good will." So would you agree as well the the proper price range would be around 12k-13k?

The supercharger didn't effect my mileage at all. The intake and exhaust made the mileage better. And as far as price goes it all depends where you're located. Where I'm located (in BC Canada) I would expect that truck to go between $14,000 and $16,000 at a local Toyota dealer. Less if private sale. But as soon as you cross the border into the States prices seem to drop so I really couldn't tell you. Look around and compare prices online. Also when buying do a good self inspection. Check brakes and all fluids. Make sure maintenance has been done. Check for leaks. Make sure the A/C is ice cold as it should be. Check body kit pieces to make sure they aren't damaged or falling off. Look for paint chips behind the wheels. There's endless things you can point out if the truck hasn't been well maintained

I'm down here in Miami. The truck is located on Sarasota Florida. Thanks for all the tips. Like I said earlier I have a whole check list to go through when I go look at the truck. You guys are awesome with your quick replies.

When you look at one under the hood inspect the bolts holding the fenders and hood, they are painted and will have wrench marks if they have been taken loose. Better than a car fax for finding prior repairs.

All in all they are a great trucks. I have a 2010 with 40k miles. Recently my throw out bearing started chirping. When I bought it shifting from 1st to second at high RPM would grind the hell out of 2nd gear. I did switch to Redline MT 90 and it made it better but I knew what was coming so I already started down the road of a T56 swap from URD. The bell housing kit is bought and I am 3/4 the way there on ordering the transmission from them. I knew this was going to happen when I bought the truck. Besides the transmission it has been an awesome truck.

Thanks for the input! How much does that set up run usually? Like a couple grand?

URD has the adapter kit for $2500.00 and the T56 Magnum for $4100.00. To me it is worth it because I plan on keeping my x runner a very long time. There are several members on this forum that have already did it and are very happy with it.

Dam so i'd have to invest a total of around $6k-$7k just for that specific tranny swap. Thats good to know.

Just remember not every transmission has the same problems. My truck has never had problems shifting at redline in any gear other than going from 4th to 5th. Don't waste your money on a new transmission unless you actually have a serious problem

I really appreciate your input as well.

All of you have been great to all my "noob" questions. Lol. I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to find a taco out of state with low miles and go from there. I've been able to find a few under 20k miles in my price range that I'm just going to ship to my city if I get it at the right price. That way it's still pretty new, I can run the proper fluids that everyone has recommended and I'm still under warranty. This forum has definitely been a HUGE help in my quest to find a Taco and I appreciate all the info. :adore::adore::adore::crinklehair:

There's alot of helpful people on here. It's surprising how active this forum is with it being for a relatively unknown model.

But whatever you do, just pay very close attention to the transmission. Some people don't have problems with theirs, however most do. And it depends on how picky you are. Some people are ok with having one that grinds here and there, me on the other hand, I find it a little unacceptable to own a "sport truck" that you couldn't shift over 3k rpm without it grinding like crazy. And the only real way to solve it is to spend 6k+ on a real trans swap.

Just throwing it back out there because of how common it is, so it has the potential to be the biggest, most expensive problem you may run into. Most off the other common problems have been brought up so you should have a pretty good list.

Oh, one other thing to check. The center console lid latch has a tendency for the stoppers that hold the button in to break. If this happens, the button will pop off, the spring will fly away to probably never be found lol, and since the lid won't latch closed and is spring loaded, will constantly be trying to flip up. There is a thread on here with a fix for that though. Just basically make sure the latch mechanism works right and the lid isn't being held shut some other way.
