Rotoras installed

Over the Christmas break I installed Rotora 6 piston calipers with 355mm rotors on my Tacoma. I thought I'd post my experience here on XRU since this more of a performance oriented crowd.

Why?

  1. I did it because I know my stock brakes are barely up to the task of stopping my truck with my race car in tow.
  2. With the supercharger installed I wanted to balance the equation of acceleration & stopping distance.
  3. The looks of a 2 piece rotor and huge caliper.
The installation is easy and Rotora supplied a really nice brake line upgrade that was perfect for the full down travel of my Icon suspension. Rotora recommends the removal of the splash guards but I kept mine. If you plan to do the same be prepared to have a lot of patience because it requires cutting and lots of bending of the stock splash guards for it to work with this kit. After a little usage, I got some brake squeak. This was easily solved by removing the pads and applying disc brake grease on the areas of contact.

Highlights: the caliper has 2 separate circuits to bleed. Meaning they apply pressure from both sides (inner and outer pads) for greater stopping power. Plus the calipers are really lightweight. The rotors are thick, and ready for some heavy duty braking sessions. Mounting brackets fit very tightly against the vehicle and the calipers for precise fitment.

A couple weeks of driving after a good brake bedding session, they feel stronger every time I drive my truck. It takes a while to adjust to the shorter stopping distance. A great compliment to the surpercharger upgrade. I'm not paid or sponsored by Rotora but after some searching for Tacoma BBK's, they were one of the few that offer a complete front kit for Tacomas and 4 runners. The only company to offer this caliber for our application. They seem to have a big following in the import car market. The people I dealt with are really nice, and were very responsive to my questions.

These are my favorite posts. 100% positive product experiences.

They look really good. What's the pedal feel like? Any softer since the bigger calipers?

thanks. Pedal is firm but does seem to engage a tiny bit closer to the floor. Nothing drastic.

You have a prerunner correct? So you went from 4 piston calipers to the bigger 6?

Its a 4WD Sport which came with 4 pistons single circuit calipers. The 4 pistons are bigger diameter than the 6 but the 6 applies force from both sides

The 4 should apply it from both sides as well just not two seperate circuits. I wonder if the master/brake booster are bigger on the 4x4 models than the X. Can anyone confirm or deny if that's true?

How much were the Rotora? Also is this a 6 lug brake mount only or will it work for 5 lugs as well?
