I am posting this thread to bring to you folks news of the all new Toyota Fortuner V6 Middle East Spec.

The Fortuner is based on a Toyota Hilux platform, with a shorter wheelbase and coil springs all around. In the Middle East spec, it comes with either the 1GR 4.0 V6 or the 2TR 2.7 Inline four.

While in the States the direction is to replace the 1GR V6 with the new 2GR-FKS 3.5 V6, and with that the old gen (1st and 2nd genearation) 1GR will cease to exist (the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser have the 3rd Gen since 2009, which Wikipedia claims is now a 6GR) the old gen 1GR still lives on strong in the Middle East, with numerous vehicles still fitted with it, including the 70 series trucks (71 SWB, 76 LWB, troop carrier, and Pickup) and the Toyota Fortuner.

1st and 2nd gen 1GR are extremely suited for boost and performance mods, due to their relatively low compression pistons of 10:1 and stout design.

The good news news is that the all new Fortuner 2016 will continue to live on with the 2nd Gen 1GR, 235 HP and 381 N.M torque. It is now equipped with a six speed manual or a six speed automatic, which is a first for the 2nd gen 1GR, which was always fitted with a five speed auto. And first in a Fortuner to have the six speed manual, which might not be very good news considering the six speed is not as robust as the R series five speed.

Another change is that now it is fitted with the ECU that was fitted on the Tacoma V6 2009-2015. So this means if URD continues with its development of the UCON EMS for that unit, it will fit the new Fortuner perfectly.

Another change from the previous Fortuner is that it will be equipped with part time 4WD. Previous generation, including mine, was a permanent 4WD system with a Torsen center locking diff.

Here are some pictures of the all new 2016 Fortuner:

First thing I wanted to confirm is if the ECU has changed. It has, and it is the same unit that is fitted in the outgoing Tacoma V6 2009-2015:

Very nice interior with paddle-shifters on the steering wheel:

Good-ol' 1GR with the oil filter on top, and notice they've changed the engine cover. The air filter has moved to a conventional air box, and the cavity created by this move over the engine is covered with the new engine cover:

Cool to see we have connect out there. Thanks for filling us in. I'm wondering the same as Warrior.

Nice looking truck. Just bizarre that Toyota continues to make two versions of the 4.0L engine.

Where is the ECU mounted, on the passenger or driver's side? Kind of looks like the passenger. If so it is rotated 180 degrees.

Do you happen to have a good picture of the MAF sensor?

looks good. are you planning to get one and mod it up?

No, my current one is excellent, and I have an emotional attachment.

What's the MSRP of that fortrunner?

It retails for SR 127,000, which is equivalent to about $ 34,000.

Yes, it is on the passenger side behind the glove box, and the Fortuner and HiLux always had their ECU rotated 180 degrees compared to Prado-platform mates (Prado, 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser).

The MAF is exactly the same Denso unit as in the previous models and any other 1GR engine, only it is fitted farther away, right next to the air filter.

I suspect the reason they continue to make the old gen 1GR is because it provide better low-end torque, which is more suitable for heavy duty trucks the likes of the 70 series. And maybe Toyota realizes that it is a more reliable engine overall.

So, how are you getting the UCON installed if the ECU is flipped 180 degrees?

Is there enough room to space the stock ECU toward the side of the vehicle and get the UCON on the plastic side?

What do the brackets look like?

Not sure how it can be done in the new model, but with my Fortuner there is enough room, fitting it between the ECU and the filter box. I had to cut off a part of the bracket that is holding some plugs in place, and just zip-tied the plugs elsewhere. It worked fine and looked great.

This is how it looked like when I had it installed:
