So it looks like I am starting to have several engine leaks starting to appear. I'm not dripping oil yet but the whole passenger side of my block has a nice coating on it. Steelership is recommending a complete engine reseal which they quoted at around $3,300. Granted most of that is probably labor and only about $1000 or so for parts.

I am probably going to get this done in the spring (unless someone here talks me out of it) and am wondering what else I should have them do while the block is apart. I'm not really trying to get huge performance gains, but I want to do whatever I can to make this engine last as long as possible without breaking the bank.

Any recommendations of additional parts I should have replaced while this is being done?

WOW, that's a hefty pricetag. I'd almost think you could get a low mileage used block for that cost....I'm subscribed to see what the grease monkeys have to say.

Yeah was thinking that myself but since i dont have a garage and this is my only vehicle I need a quick turnaround. I'm sure I can find a used block for around $3000 or so but then I'd still have to pay another $2000 or so in labor to get it installed. I go out of town a bit for work so i usually drop the truck off for a few weeks when i have longer stuff done. I was told that they can do the reseal in a week.

I'm not against the idea of a new block but I dont think it will save me any money and I least I know I haven't abused mine thus far.

Is the oil all around the power steering pump area?

Clean the engine well. Put die in the oil. Run it, use a black light to figure out exactly what and where it is leaking from, then decide to fix it or not and if you can fix it yourself.

Yeah this is what I was thinking of doing. Its definitely coming from the one timing cover, but the part that worries me is it looks like it is coming from the front of the engine somewhere as well. Guess I'll have to investigate a little more.

I had a big oil leak on the front of my XRunner. Thought it was the main seal. I pulled the crank pulley off and found a bolt had fallen out of the timing cover behind the pulley. Easy fix.

Something like that would make sense in my scenario as well. I had a MK 1 supercharger mounted for a day and found a bent pulley shaft on it so I had to take it all back off. It was kind of late when we put it all back together so its very likely we didn't torque one of the timing cover bolts properly, or used an incorrect bolt. The used MK 1 kit i got wasn't labeled very well so I couldn't really tell what bolts were for what.

The area with silicon, is a known problematic leaking section of the timing cover.

just drive it down leave it with me for a day an ill reseal the motor for you.

:) If it comes to that I'll let you know. Would rather have someone with experience to it anyway rather than taking it to a dealer with a bunch of high school kids.

I've changed my valve cover gaskets since the plugs were covered in oil. That's the only leak so far I've had. My dads Tacoma was leaking from that timing cover spot and then one day the mechanic fairy fixed it. Now it's got 300k and still doesn't leak. I'm still stumped on that
