I'm doing a turbo LQ4 swap and I'm looking for some insight into what I should use for engine management. Can the UCON be real time tuned, can it run a LS engine. I know the MS3 will do everything I need as far as engine management but it won't interface with the stock ecu and I'd like to use the factory gauges and keep cruise control. Any information will be helpful. Also if you know of other ways of going about this that would be great. Thanks in advance!
Make sure you get all the electronic components as well as the Ecu. I know a lot of guys run the mega squirt but I'm not entirely sure what the advantage is. You won't be able to use the ucon it's a good item to sell though. Do you allready have the motor? The ls based ecu's are as close to stand alone as you can get and the other components aren't too difficult to tie in. Also get the gas pedal from the same vehicle if you want electronic throttle.
As far as factory gauges. You will need a Dakota digital speedo unit and you can make the tack and speed bang on. Most of the wiring isn't too hard to tie in. You'll see once you dig into it though. Fuel gauge is separate so no worry there it will still work I used an after market water temp sensor so my factory gauge doesn't work but it doesn't bother me. The only other thing is the CEL I never wired mine up either but it can be done I think. I never wired up the cruise because I broke the clock spring and havnt replaced it yet but it can also be done.
Long story short. Use the factory lq4 ecu but make sure you get all components. Including gas pedal and tcu if running an automatic. You can probably sell the Tacoma ecu you won't need it. Also make sure when you put the motor in to it set it 1/2" to the passenger side so it lines up with the diff.
