Recommend checking the pins that hold the plastic bed rail caps in place.

Talking about the plastic pins that are inserted through the inside of the bed on both ends. I found two of the push pins laying in my bed, so I picked up four replacements at my local Toyota dealership. Part #90467-07188. When I went to install them, I found the other two pins were loose and...

Finally got around to using the Cerakote headlight restoration kit.

I'm happy with the results: My advice: don't wait until your headlights are this bad before using the kit...lol I used the old "WD-40" trick last year for my state inspection, but finally decided to do it correctly this year.

Octane as it pertains to engine performance

Engine Masters had a naturally aspirated LS-3 on a Dyno at Westech, and decided to test 87 and 91 pump gas from a gas station down the street from them, as well as Sonoco race gas in 110 and 116 octane levels. There was no noticeable difference in power between any of the fuels. E85 did make a...

Just bled my brakes & clutch, and clutch engagement is just as you push in the pedal

I used my Motive Power Bleeder to flush the brake/clutch on the X Wednesday, but I forgot I needed an extra bottle to do the clutch. When I was flushing the fluid, all four corners went smoothly, but I was just about finished with the clutch when I saw bubbles coming through the "catch" bottle...

"Over-built" ball joints and other suspension components

Found this linked on TW: https://www.mevotech.com/brands/ttx/ These may be well known in the 4X4 world, but I did a search for my 2008 X-Runner, and they sell parts for it too. Anyone tried these?

INSTALLED STEERING WHEEL AUDIO CONTROLS ON MY 08

Another thread from TW. This looks like one of my future projects: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/installed-steering-wheel-audio-controls-on-my-08.316944/ As with all other X-Runners of my era, I have the left side steering wheel controls, but I don't have the right side controls...

    Front Wheel Bearing Questions

How long do they normally last on X-Runners with stock wheels and no spacers? Do X-Runners and Pre-Runners use the same front wheel bearings & hubs? When it's time to replace them, what brands are preferred? I plan to buy a hub/bearing assembly to make the replacement as easy and as quick...

Adding Bluetooth to a factory radio

While reading through different message boards, I stumbled across a thread about adding a Bluetooth module to our factory radio. Has anyone done this? If so, what product did you use and were you satisfied with it? Crutchfield sells two units that fit our Tacomas: The Crux BTS-TY2 Interface...

Great engine oil article from GRM

Grassroots Motorsports is my favorite automobile magazine, and they just posted a great online article about choosing the correct engine oil. Ask an Oil Expert Part 1: All About Oil for Street and Autocross Use...

    My baby's getting new shoes

State inspection is coming up, and was fairly confident there was enough tread to make it through another inspection, but I noticed the sidewalls had a lot of cracking on all four tires. Not sure if this would pass, so I decided to pull the trigger & order new tires. Sticking with "all...

Replaced brake shoes - a few tips

Just replaced the rear brake shoes with Toyota OEM replacement brake shoes - and yes, it is a PITA! I've only replaced rear brake shoes once before (a couple decades ago), so I hit YouTube for a video. I didn't see any X-Runner videos, but there was a 4x4 Tacoma (6-lug wheel) that had all of...

    Brake pads & shoes

Anyone have a part number for the pads & shoes for the stock brakes? My state inspection finally saw that I'm approaching the wear limits of the original pads (after 80K miles...) Have thought about upgrading to a better pad, if anyone knows those part numbers... Looked at the EBC...

What are the best "aftermarket" carpet type floormats?

Not a Tacoma question, but...lol Bought a 2008 TSX to become my new "daily driver" so I'll stop putting excess miles on my X-Runner. Looking online to OEM Acura parts stores, it appears they only sell rubber floor mats. I want carpet type mats. Looking online, it seems that most...

Flaking paint on my 2008 SWB hood scoop

Since this is a small area, will tackle the prep & repaint myself. With that in mind, any recommendations where I can buy Speedway Blue (8P1) paint in a "rattle can" sprayer? (Don't have a LVHP paint system in my garage.) I will also want a rattle can of clear coat, preferably from the same...

    Cooling system maintenance

Truck is 7 years old (wow, that went quick...lol), so I probably need to replace my coolant this summer. Any tricks to make sure I get all of the air out of the system? (i.e. does it "burp" itself, or is there something I need to do?) As for draining the coolant, are there drain plugs...

Chevy putting the Tacoma in their cross-hairs

Sounds like Toyota better "man up" with the next version. I see 300hp as the absolute minimum HP rating for the next V6 (without having to add a supercharger). 236 just doesn't cut it! Although this article doesn't mention it, rumors have Chevrolet adding a diesel engine option to the next...
