That will work, they usually come with a lock nut that screw on first and then after the knob is screwed on you unscrew the lock nut till its tight against the ball.
Yup, it should come with one if not it will still work, lock nut it's mostly useful for height adjustments!
The lock nut is important to line up the shift pattern. When you cut threads on a shaft, you can not control the start thread. As a result, you need the adjustment of the lock nut to align the shift patten straight.
