Calling all transmission issues on Xrunner

Ok here is the deal fellas.... I'm looking to pin point the issue on your transmissions. I really don't think the issue is in the syncros. I have a second gear grind and high revving fifth gear grind. Question I have to all of you is to explain what your tranny does and does not do. When it does it and when it doesn't do it. I think I may have found a fix for it.... I really don't think it's that big of an issue. I need as much input from everyone that has any transmission issues. The fifth gear is possibly the syncro issue but any other gears before that I think I know a fix.... I'm just gonna have to see what everyones issues are.... I'm gonna ask you guys also that are having issues to do a little bit of research on your trannies and try some things out. Thanks a lot fellas. :top:

I have a slight 5th gear grind anytime I shift into 5th in excess of 2,500 RPMS. The higher the RPMS, the worse it is. I typically have to shift into 5th after hesitating for a second or 2.

I do not have any grinding in any other gear, I do not even have a grind when downshifting from 6th to 5th.

Going from B&M SS to TRD SS reduced the grind slightly.

Edit: I have NOT tried MT-90 yet...

on 2nd trans and had all the TSB's... cant shift fast in 2nd gear or I get grind.... 5th gear grind at high speeds. unless I shift very very slow.

I thought we already established it was a design flaw. Wasnt it redesigned or headed that way?

the camaro cadillac cts use the ay6. They have problems too.

( Means give it a little gas so you don't get the jerk from the engine and tranny not being at the right rpms).... or you just shifting up into 5th and letting the clutch go so the tranny and engine match by themselves?....

Sweet a 2nd gear grind... Ok so here is the deal.... Is this shifting high rpms or low rpms?..... Next time you are in the X without pushing the clutch in and at idle do me a favor and just try putting it into second... See if it grinds... Don't try and force it.... just like a daily driving shift..... Don't give it gas or anything otherwise it will try to go into second because you're tranny will try to do a clutchless shift which is possible but only while moving... I know it sounds stupid but just trust me on this.... Like I said before i'm going to be asking you to do some stuff for all the people that have transmission issues.... Anyways... When you are doing that does it go fairly deep into the notch of where second gear goes?... Ask if you don't know what that means... Also on your 5th gear same questions as the other guy...

I really don't think it's a bell housing flaw.... I really think it's something else.... I think I have pinpointed it pretty damn close too.... I just need everyone's input on this... I have been studying my tranny since I got it when it was running perfect because I was determined to find out it's issues.... I knew that this was a known issue so that is why I studied this tranny and kept my eye on it....

Have mt-90 in and urd ss. No second gear grind after fluid change but recently have a knocking when pulling hard in third and sixth. Happened out of no where. Changed fluid to check for shaving and found nothing.

A knocking? what do you mean?.... mt90 seems to be fixing issues... I just wanna see how long it's going to fix it for.... and what was going on with your tranny before the fluid change?....

My old transmission was jacked in every way. I just got a new transmission and here are my current issues.

In any selection the gears will hit. This is while shifting slow and mid RPM's, it will not hit every time but it will very often. Changing gears just has never been smooth.

Every once and a while I will grind also, not in any specific item.

My trans only has 1500 miles so its still going to pick up some new problems soon.

Yes it will grind but still go into gear...

and yes I usually rev match when going from 6th to 5th, but I usually only go from 6th to 5th if everyone in front of me is slowing down to a point where I start bogging, and in that case no rev matching is usually needed..

Sometimes I have a second gear gring but it's because I'll go to shift from first to second and it will lock me out, so I'm thinking it should be in second and I let the clutch out and that's when it will grind. Also 80% of the time from a stop going from neutral to first it's a bitch to get in gear. If I go from N to 1 and repeat it will go in. Also reverse has same issue, I get denied and have to do it a second time to get I in reverse.
I've had Amsoil Syn gear oil in there since I started having these issues. When I drain it it's pretty dirty unlike the rear diff which when drained looks like brand new gear oil.

Clutch and flywheel were replaced in October by me, an über Awesome Tech:top:

My only issue is my transmission doesn't like second gear, mostly at low speeds. I have to force it into gear when going slow, sometimes having to go back into N or 1st to get it to go at all. Then I get a "thunk....thunk" when it finally does force in.

I would REALLY love a new tranny that had no issues, as this is my only real 'gripe' about the truck. There are other quirks, but I can live with them. Nature of the beast?

I get a grind going into third. Low revs, high revs, doesn't matter. It will go in every time, no problem, it just grinds a little on the way in. But, if I shift slowly, it goes in without a grind. It also seems to help if I shift into third with the shifter to the left side of the third gear slot. In other words, hold the shifter to the left as much as I can and still get in third gear.

I'm interested in what you think your fix is. Also, what's mt-90? Is that an oil - what brand?

I have always had the T/O bearing problem. I'm going on my 4th or 5th one already @ 36k miles.
After my last bearing was replaced, my transmission was perfect. Silent and shifted smooth for a month or 2. Then I developed the EXACT same symptoms as nine9six. After a week or so of that, I finally went to the dealership and these issues miraculously stopped so I looked like a jackass. As I was leaving the dealership, the T/O bearing started back up again. I haven't had anymore grinding problems since, but the T/O bearing won't stfu.

My first transmission had the the squeaky T/O and would occasionally grind shifting into first and almost always grind shifting into 5th. the faster the shift into 5th the more likely and sever the grind. Cold weather made both worse.

Toyota replaced that transmission around 30k miles under warranty and now the new transmission will grind a bit shifting into 3rd, but only when really cold out. Once the truck is completely warmed up it never grinds.

I'm also on the second shifter and in need of a 3rd, they wear out way too easy. My 1996 Tacoma with 3x the mileage has a tighter shifter.

Also had the master cylinder replaced around 30k miles because the pedal was hard to push.

How much technical abilities do you have? You think you can take a look inside your shifter and tell me how the little link looks on shifter?

Have you tried going into 3rd then 1st?... If you could try that thanks. :top:

Nope every other gear shifts just fine, no grinding or anything..

That is why I am hopeful that MT-90 will resolve my 5th gear grind..

Well every tranny that has issues hasn't really been inspected except by toyota.... They could give two shits about the issues... they just either don't or do replace it.... I've studied this tranny because it was a known issue since I got the X.... Seems to me that there is an issue more in the linkages than there is with syncros.... I think the issues are related to links in shifting not the syncros themselves or if they do go bad it is because these links are going bad.... If the syncro only gets half way engaged it will do it's job but only for so long because you are putting a lot of wear on that outer edge of that syncro... I think this links are bad in the tranny.

as stated above is what I think the fix may be. Mt90 is a more aggressive gear oil. It seems to clean syncros quite well which brings them back but i'm wanting to see how long and how the syncros look after they have the gear oil swap. In your case. Try going into 5th and then 3rd. Please and thank you.

I don't have any experience in the throw out bearing issue. I have yet to run into one that has this issue. I wish I could hear your t/o bearing in person. Vids are not good enough. I heard your vid but it's impossible to pin point it in a video....

Is this grinding at high or low rpms?... any rpms?... And if you try and push it into 3rd without the clutch does it go pretty far into the notch?.... Does it grind?... Don't give it gas or anything just at idle try pushing it into 3rd.... don't force it just do it as if shifting into 3rd normally.

So going from 3rd to 1st is what u want? Not really following cause if I'm in 2nd u want me to go to 3rd and then to 1st. Just too many extra moves but I'll yry it and get back to u.

So how does redline my-90 work better then Amsoil syn gear oil?

I can also shift thru all my gears with moderate accel and not use the clutch without any grinding. Just like how u would drive an 18 spd tractor.

Anyone else?
