WHAT SENATOR JOHN GLENN SAID :
>>
>> Things that make you think a little:
>>
>> There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January.
>> In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the
>> month of January. That's just one American city,
>> about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq .
>>
>> When some claim that President Bush shouldn't
>> have started this war, state the following:
>>
>> a. FDR led us into World War II.
>>
>> b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did.
>> From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ..
>> an average of 112,500 per year.
>>
>> c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea .
>> North Korea never attacked us.
>> From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost .
>> an average of 18,334 per year.
>>
>> d. John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
>> Vietnam never attacked us.
>>
>> e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
>> From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost .
>> an average of 5,800 per year.
>>
>> f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
>> Bosnia never attacked us.
>> He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three
>> times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on
>> multiple occasions.
>>
>> g. In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush
>> has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled
>> al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya , Iran , and North Korea
without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who
>> slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.
>>
>> The Democrats are complaining
>> about how long the war is taking.
>> But ..
>>
>> It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno
>> to take the Branch Davidian compound.
>> That was a 51-day operation.
>>
>> We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons
>> in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find
>> the Rose Law Firm billing records.
>>
>> It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the
>> Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard
>> than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his
>> Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquid•XR•XR•XR•XR
>>
>> It took less time to take Iraq than it took
>> to count the votes in Florida !!!!
>>
>> Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB!
>> The Military morale is high!
>>
>> The biased media hopes we are too ignorant
>> to realize the facts.
>>
>> But Wait. There's more!
>>
>> JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR)
>> Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13
>>
>> Some people still don't understand why military personnel
>> do what they do for a living. This exchange between
>> Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum
>> is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive
>> impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one
>> man's explanation of why men and women in the armed
>> services do what they do for a living.
>>
>> This IS a typical, though sad, example of what
>> some who have never served think of the military.
>>
>> Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn):
>> "How can you run for Senate
>> when you've never held a real job?"
>>
>> Senator Glenn (D-Ohio):
>> "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
>> I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions.
>> My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different
>> occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my
>> checkbook, Howard, it was my life on the line. It was
>> not a nine-to-five job, where I took my tie off to take the
>> daily cash receipts to the bank."
>>
>> "I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day...
>> to a veterans' hospital and look those men ..
>> with their mangled bodies in the eye, and tell THEM
>> they didn't hold a job!
>>
>> You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone,
>> to
the widows and orphans
>> of Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee...
>> and you look those kids in the eye and tell them
>> that their DADS didn't hold a job.
>>
>> You go with me on Memorial Day, and you stand in
>> Arlington National Cemetery , where I have more friends
>> buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
>> those waving flags
>>
>> You stand there, and you think about this nation,
>> and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?
>>
>> What about you?"
>>
>> For those who don't remember .
>> During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney
>> representing the Communist Party in the USA .
>>
>> Now he's a Senator!
>>
>> If you can read this, thank a teacher.
>> If you ar e reading it in English thank a Veteran.

i'm still against the "war" in iraq. the focus should have been on helping those in this country before trying to force our political views on another country.
  • our public education system is a joke... and nobody seems to give a crap about it.
  • most (if not all) public schools in urban cities do not even have enough books for the students (no matter if they actually read them or not).
  • the number of high school dropouts more than double the number of high school graduates throughout the country.
  • because of our poor education system, there are increasing amounts of legal citizens FAR below the poverty line, thusly increasing the national debt due to welfare.
  • welfare is no longer meant to help people in times of need, but used as a motivation to have procreate to get more welfare money (which may or may not be used to properly take care of those kids)
the list goes on and on, but i'll stop there.

back to the original point. while i do think we are handling ourselves well with the military use, the whole effort has wasted more money than we know what to do with, and has served us no purpose. we have continuously made ourselves look like political bullies that keep beating up other countries for their "milk money" (and by milk i mean oil). we still have not found osama, we have still not taken control of afghanistan, and we still have not even attempted to start looking at our own budget from within our own country.

ok, i'll stop there :p

John Glenn = badass. I had the distinct priviledge of being able to watch his launch into space aboard the Shuttle while standing on the original Mercury launch pad from which Friendship 7 was launched. Talk about a poignant moment. Some great pics, one of the coolest moments of my life.

On the political note: GOP fo' life. Dems suck.

I just love how quickly people forget about what happend on September 11th 2001.

Are we supposed to just let them get away with it and hope it never happens again??? If we pull out of the middle east, there will be more attacks on United States soil. There will be American men, women, and children who loose their lives.

The best part is that then the liberals will say "well we never should have left the middle east, George Bush sucks" :motz: :motz:

just out of curiosity, what does the middle east (iraq, iran, kuwait, etc...) have to do with afghanistan and the taliban?

osama and the taliban/al-qaeda admitted to the 9/11 attacks, not saddam, sunnis, or shiites.

I read that earlier, but it was nice to read it again.

John Glen is an outstanding example of what it means to be an american.
We need less people talking •XR•XR•XR•XR and more people talking sence.

And Lucke, I agree with you completely, although I am not in complete agreeance with what how we are handling Iraq, I do believe our presence is needed in that part of the world.

On the public education and welfar note, you are absolutely correct. Our public schools are a mess. In public school, I found myself as a sqaure peg trying to fit into a round hole. Nobody would want to help me and dismissed me as a "stupid kid" throughout my public education. I was lucky enough to switch to a private school, where my skills with engineering and mechanics were allowed to flourish.

and wellfare is a crutch for the lazy. Just today I saw a episode of cops where they were busting a prostitute. At the age of 26, she supposidly had 8 kids, none of which she was supporting. I hate to say it, but I imaging all 8 of those kids are destined for a life of crime, prison, drug use, ect. and will general be a drain on society.

I know it sounds horrible, but I seriously think some kind of Eugenics program needs to be instituted into the united states, there are some people who just shouldn't be procreating

It's more than just finding Osama and shutting down terrorist states. By having a military force in their backyard it sends a message that will make them think twice before attacking America again

Another example of the internet/email at work. The reason it wasnt in the recent news is because the John Glenn bit happened in 1974.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/glenn.asp

I've never seen that site before. I'm going to start running my emails through that before I make ass out of myself. I did think that the speech and the facts didn't "mesh" well.

I'll tell you what. My soldiers are my hero's. They work so hard to keep my unit at readiness level 1. Whether it's the personnel Sgt. that sits at a computer all day and makes sure we get our promotions, the PFC turning wrenches on the birds, or my 1st Sgt. running the show. They are all my hero's and deserve enormous respect.

But my biggest Hero is 2LT John Shaw Vaughan.

John Vaughan grew up in Vail, Colorado. He graduated from Battle Mountain High School in 2001 and then continued to study aviation business at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. At ERAU, he joined ROTC and commissioned as a 2nd Lt in 2005. He was sent to IOBC in Ft Benning, Georgia before he was assigned to the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. In April of 2006 shortly after his 23rd birthday, he moved all of his belongings to Alaska. Three weeks later, John deployed to Iraq and was stationed in Mosul. His time in Iraq was short lived, but he enjoyed his every moment there. He was killed when his platoon came into small arms fire in the early morning of June 7, 2006. Lt Vaughan was awarded the bronze star and the purple heart. He survived by his mother, Sarah, and sister, Becca.

He was a true American soldier, one that loved protecting the your freedom and mine.
