Yeah, the truck obviously throws rocks at itself. Drove down a wet dirt road yesterday and where do you think most of the mud is? About a quarter inch thick of clay along the fenders exactly where I have chips.

lol BO...

If we get it fixed, or if the stealerships give in, wont the paint just chip again later on after more driving?

With that being said, if Toyota or the dealerships give in to this, they will be slaves to repainting all of the X's for a lifetime because of the way it throws rocks... right? :dontknow:

You go get it painted, it chips, you get it painted, then it chips. They (Toyota or the dealers) will be entitled to a never-ending problem that they will have to fix, free of charge, every time. Thats my question, or argument, because with TSB's, arent they usually a one time fix?

I believe the reason for the rock chips is the offset of the rims/tires. I b&tched enough and had mine repainted at 20,000 miles they still chipped after. I put some 3M on and that seemed to help a bit. I also got new rims/tires with a different offset and that solved the problem(i know everybody can't/doesn't want to do that). Now, I have the bed side crack problem and my truck is in the body shop for 4 days. So now i get all brand new ones w/ 3M.
So, I don't think it is the paint as much as it might be the offset of the rims/tires.:dontknow:JMO

I am having the same problem with my truck, I went to the dealer with the recall paperwork and they told me to get the ***** outta there. Guess they dont like me since i already made them warranty a trans/flywheel/clutch since a bolt backed out and was rattling around in the bell housing for a month, that and 2 rears. Yea boycott Freehold DCH Toyota in New Jersey. Their service department and staff all bite the big one

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just bought 05 a bit ago and am not stoked on the paint AT ALL. Just seems to have issues everywhere. The littlest thing takes paint off. Almost like the EPA put their balls in a vice or somethin. So has anyone had any success working with a dealership? I bought mine used from a Mazda dealership so I'm having a herd time imagining a Toyota dealership wanting to help me out out of the goodness of their hearts. The other reason I'm posting on this thread is that Toyota has a new desire to earn their name back with the recent issues wit the gas pedals and that Lexus SUV recall. Maybe they would be williing to help? . . . What's BO?

So far as the major problem with the fender flares, I found a solution! (kind of)

They wouldn't replace it because of the rock chips because the distric rep wouldn't approve it. So finally, after numerous times bitching, I took a putty knife and stuck it between the rubber sealing on the flare and the truck and just ever so slightly pulled it apart. Barely noticeable, but when I took it back to the dealership and showed them I got me some new flares on warranty.

Worth a shot :p

:rockon:Nice!... I dont think I would havemuch luck with that since mine is an 05 and I bought it used from a mazda dealership. Got a great deal on the truck but as a result I highly doubt a Toyota dealership is gonna take my truck on as a charity project... I'm really just overall disappointed with the paint. Littlest thing chips it.

This is still a problem up to 2009 models, 2010 models have 3M , now i'm not sure on 2010 X-Runners since they don't exist in Canuckistan, but all the 2010 Tacoma's i've seen in Toyota dealers showrooms, have a patch of 3M paint protection film on the rear fender flare area.

Please keep in mind fellas, the guards come PAINTED from the factory. This is a HUGE help when pleading your case with the dealer, as it's way cheaper than repairing them. Most dealers, when you tell them it's painted will be ecstatic and replace them under warranty.
