I just took the hood scoop insert off of the hood to see how it was made and see if I could do anything with it. To take it off you just unscrew the five 10mm nuts and one phillips screw. You might want to use a magnetic driver when taking out the phillips screw, so that the screw doesn't fall down into the frame of the hood. The metal screen and the plastic piece behind it are sandwiched together and held to the fiberglass by 3 rivets. You can drill out these rivets and then you would be able to separate all the pieces and modify them how you want. My truck kind of has a straight black theme going on so I decided not to modify it (for now). But if I had a model with the chrome grill and stuff, I would probably take the screen out and paint it chrome to match. I think that would look pretty cool. Or it would be cool if you have a bright colored truck and painted the screen the same color as your truck. Or you could leave the screen black, but paint the plastic piece behind it. Or if you're good with a drill or a Dremmel tool you could cut out some of the plastic and make air actually flow through the scoop.

It would be pretty cool if some company made a billet aluminum screen to match a billet aluminum grill.

If my truck wasn't all black I would certainly do a little modding to the scoop. Just thought you guys might want to know what can be done with the scoop.

Does removing the plastic affect anything? I was thinking about taking mine out to get more airflow in that champ.

I haven't done it but know someone who has. The temp in the engine bay does go down. The only down side to doing it...a bunch of crap will fly in your engine bay causing it to get real dirty. Also read on CT that some guy had warping issues cause of wind resistance.

mort, the dirt issue really that drastically increased unless you live off a dirt road in the country, but for us city folk there is no more dirt in the compartment than what goes thru that big grille .

Yeah! you are right. I live in Hawaii though so I am again thinking Hawaii mentality where it rains every other day and wind and dirt is everywhere here. But all in all...you are right. I take back what I said if you live in the city.

And the mass of water from rain on the top of the engine every time it rains. You may see a few degrees temp drop if you just sit in traffic all day, but then again, so what. This mod has all negatives and no real positives.

I cut mine out the weekend after I bought my truck. I have driven through one heavy rainfall here (granted, it's Southern California) with no trouble at all. Pushing 3500 miles since I've done it with no issues at all.

There's no benefit to doing it at all that I have noticed, but it looks way better. I was hoping the butt dyno would show me an increase, but it felt nothing.

Engine bay doesn't get much dirtier, certainly not as dirty as I would have expected. Rain is a non-issue for me as well.

This question for me?

Honestly, no I didn't. But it looks a lot better open than it does closed. And I'm pretty good about keeping my engine bay clean regardless of the scoop.

It's just a matter of opinion. I thought about leaving mine closed because I was buying the T-Rex grill. Then I opened it up to see how it looked knowing full well I could put it back together. Now that the grill is on, I like it better open without the T-Rex bars in the scoop.

Different strokes for different folks. That's what makes truck customizing great.

I've taken a bunch of crap from my F150 Harley friends for selling my HD and buying a TuRD as they call it. Most of it is in jest, but there are a few guys who are brand loyal...something I've never understood. I buy what I like because I like it, not because it's the best thing available from 1 manufacturer.

Opened or closed...doesn't matter to me...just make it your own!

well, all i know is i got the airaid intake because i wanted to retain the stock airbox, so that i still had the little mesh thing that straightened out the air, as well as have the MAF in the same place. Because the Airaid is inside the engine bay, it does take in hot air despite the "heat shield." I know for a fact that by opening up the hood scoop it is, albeit probably minimal, helping with power via the intake.

Had guys asking whats the point of the scoop with it closed ? that went thru my mind for a couple of months then said wtf lets go for it.YES i did see a slight temp drop but never expected to see a hp gain.As stated before the dirt issue is not a prob.call it just a matter of TASTE!:top:

I ran an open scoop on my 99 (glassworks) its looks sweet and all, but now at 115k miles on it, the engine bay looks like A$$. Everthing weathers and stays dirty (always getting wet). My 99 is spotless other than the engine bay (all the little fasteners have surface rust in places and all the aluminum will oxidize over time).

if you want to keep your engine bay looking nice (other that cleaning it all the time) Id stay away from it. If you dont care, it looks sweet and will cool things off a little. there are a few guys ive seen actually run their intake to it. I know the trd X does.

Is it possible to run an open hood scoop with the T-REX hood insert? Just put mine on today and was contemplating if I should do it, but noticed if i opened it there would be no where to screw into

I believe that the manufacture put plastic piece there for a reason, manily for aero dynamics.... think about it, why would they want all the turbulant air being sucking into the engine bay creating unwanted lift in the front of the car. The only place that excess air has to go is out from under the car(thus disrupting the flow under car and in essecnce blocking the air from flowing more smoothly under the car). mabey if the vent went directly over the intake with a heat shield, or an intercooler it would be a good idea. but it doesnt... my two cents

p.s. i am totally down for moding the car its yours and you can do what ever the fkuck you want to

yeah my friend talked me out of opening the scoop because he said that it would probably ruin the aerodynamics, making the engine bay into like a plastic bag in the wind.
