I separated my shoulder last winter snowboarding and still have pain. Im also heavy into weightlifting so I understand what your going through. I would recommend going to a sports doctor that specializes in these injuries so they can recommend the right treatment. I did therapy for a couple months and had to ease back into training. My treatment at first was 2 weeks no weights, ice ice ice, special strength exercises, and electrotherapy.

My lifts and routine are back at full force but I still have pain that seems to be slowly fading away as time goes by. Shoulders are tough injuries, my friend tore his lifting and his recover has been longer than mine. Who knows it might be nothing that extreme but you don't want to make it worst so I would take time off or see a doctor.

any sprain strain you should start with r.i.c.e rest, ice(up to 15min at a time multiple times a day) elavation(not a prob with a shoulder inj) is it dull or sharp pain? definitely take time off lifting cardio should be fine. if it is a dull throbbing type of pain follow rice for several days see if you start to feel some relief.if it doesn't change check it out. if it is sharp follow rice until you can get a checkup don't wait. I was a neuromuscular therapist dealing with chronic pain patients and sport massage therapy. good luck and if you have any other questions feel free to contact me

Well here is one of my long stories, I have had 4 surgeries on my shoulders and as a result had to stop playing football and stop lifting weights and my shoulder still subluxs (pops out of socket) in my sleep. The reason my shoulder got so bad was for many reasons but the main reason was because I didn't give it enough time to heal properly. 8 weeks after an open surgery I was in full pads hitting again. after the second surgery I did the same thing this time it was arthroscopic repaired and shrunk the capsul and just a little over 4 weeks I was in full pads again.

well to make a long story short, I damaged my shoulder permanatly and the only way they can get me back to the way I should be is replacing my joints So my opinion is give it time to heal see a sports injury specialist and go from there and follow his/her advice. I have a hard time playing a full game of softball with out agonizing pain, you dont want to be in my shoes it sucks to go from a very athleticly gifted person to someone that can barley hold his arms above his head with out the worry of them poping out and gaining about 20% body fat haha.

probably not the best idea man. the longer you wait, the more likely you are to injure it further. not to mention scar tissues building up over time, etc. and it could cost you more in the long run if you don't have it checked out. I won't go into too long of story, but i'm talking from personal experience, and over 50k in medical bills. lol
they may just tell you to do exactly what you plan to do. or they may tell you to wrap it. or some anit inflamatory meds. or give you physical therapy or special exercises to do on your own.
I walk with a minor limp because i didn't listen to my doctor. and also because I RE-injured my hips and didn't get them checked out. and it does inhibit some things in my life. I can't carry anything walking backwards, ie, a couch when moving to a new house, etc. If I DO something that i know I'm not supposed to, my leg dislocates from my hip, and I hit the ground like a sack of rocks.
that's what insurance is for. and even if you don't have insurance, It's better to be safe than sorry.

ok, i guess the story got kinda long. lol

Ya dude. I have ac seperated my shoulder (collar bone from shoulder blade and torn the tendons and ligaments). Sounds to me like you may have strained or slightly torn some ligaments. You need to let those heal properly. Try staying out for a couple weeks, or at least off that area, then come back really light and work your way back. Its probably a good idea to have it looked at. I still have pain in mine when I do lat pull downs or peck deck.

I am going to have it looked at...Probably after Xfest. Just went to the eye doctor other day for new glasses and going to try contacts...So once I get all that taken care of learning how to use the contacts and crap..I will move onto my shoulder. I work in a hospital to..so I will ask a few docs around to tell me what they think as well.

I've had 3 rotator cuff surgeries and I say you should get it checked. If the doc says it is the rotator cuff and you need surgery, do what you want until you can't, then get it fixed. I know it's medically not the best advice but that is a brutal surgery to recover from if you're halfway active. The way i was told to see if it is your rotator is reach out straight in front of you, thumb down, and raise your arm straight up. If you can't, it's rotator cuff, labrum, or both. At least that's what I was told. Good luck. Shoulders suck.

na thats not it..I have no problems moving my arm...I am pretty sure its the AC joint and I might have stretched or maybe a slight tear in the tendons. thats what the one doc said it sounds like I just asked. I wouldnt call it agonizing pain...more of a annoyance so I dont think it is damaged to much.

I had a type 3 shoulder separation and essentially the doctor did nothing, just told me to rest and let it heal on it's own since I did the no surgery option. After about 5 weeks he gave me the go ahead to start lifting light weights again to rehab it.
