Drag Racing Helmets

Okay so this has become my next "mod"

Im wanting to know what all you guys are using. If you have info on what is currently the rule(s) on drag racing helmets that would be useful as well. Did some searching on google and didnt find much on the rules..some older info from 04...but last night the tech was saying something about the helmets changed in early 08:dontknow:

try and get a helmet that is Snell2008 Snell is what NHRA goes by. and basically all snell helmets are DOT approved. if you get a Snell2008 helmet it will be good for 10 years anywhere you go.

look on the inside of the helmet to see the snell rating its just a sticker. and if your at a NHRA track and dont have it you cant run

From 2008 NHRA rulebook:

For all 10.00 to 13.99 closed bodied cars, either an open face or a full face Snell M2000, M2005, K98, K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.1A, 31.1/2005, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.1/2005, or 41.2A helmet with or without a shield is required.

10.00-13.99: All ET non-OEM supercharged, non-OEM turbocharged, or nitrous equipped cars with an OEM or .025 inch steel firewall, jacket meeting SFI Spec 3.2A/1 mandatory.

yea I know the helmet is expensive, it was just the first one that came up in a google search

the track didnt say anything about a jacket either, and I saw plenty of 12 and 13 sec cars with just helmet and short sleeve shirts

well when I go to Atco, they dont really check if the helmet is DOT approved, they just check if you have one. I have this really old crappy helmet that my friend gave me a few years ago. it was really beat so i sanded it down and gave it a sweet paint job. Its got the toyota logo with the devil horns on thw back and of course the XRU and URD logo on the front. ill get some pics on later :top:

I was able to get my helmet for $40 off of craigslist - snell2005. I'll post pics of it this afternoon. Check that and ebay for deals, people are selling them all the time.

As far as a jacket, different tracks require different things. For instancy my track doesn't require a jacket unless your running lower then a 10.99 (if i remember right).

Find your tracks website and they'll have all the rules there. :top:

Motorcycle helmets are like motor oil... you can pay as little or as much as you want. But you generally get what you pay for. I got my Shoei RF-1000 for $150 on clearance (normally a $450 item) from a motorcycle store in Peoria, IL. I know it saved my life when I hit the gravel patch and went head first into the ditch.

The simpson helmet is the one my brother has... he loves it. He's also going 6.7's in the 1/4 mile though at 200mph.

If you go out and buy a motorcycle helmet it mostlikely will work for what you need... being most of us are going to be running in the 13's with a s/c then i wouldn't go with anything extreme.

as for a used helmet....no thanks. I might call you today for the clearnace though. Gotta get back to work
