First gear will get used up awfully fast, especially if you have FI;

Code:
    Tacoma X-runner
    Tire Diameter 27 P255/45R18

              [B]Final Gear-MPH RPM 3.15 3.73 RPM Drop[/B]

    1st Gear Ratio 4.17 5,500 33.63 28.40 0

    2nd Gear Ratio 2.19 5,500 64.04 54.08 2,888

    3rd Gear Ratio 1.49 5,500 94.13 79.49 3,742

    4th Gear Ratio 1.19 5,500 117.86 99.53 4,393

    5th Gear Ratio 1 5,500 140.25 118.44 4,622

    6th Gear Ratio 0.85 5,500 165.00 139.34 4,675

At least you would be using 4 gears for the quarter mile :top:

Ok, now say it in english :dontknow:
acoording to the specs 6th gear maxed out will bring us to 165 mph, but our vehicle spped sensor ( sensor that reads speed ) will only read up to 155 mph. I will try to find out the spec shhet where I saw this

not really. they make for a higher top end, but the prerunner gears would make for better acceleration - and hopefully keep the engine in a better powerband between shifts.... would be great for those of us with the URD blower

No, the XR & Pre-runners are geared almost identically - look at the first chart posted by Xrunnit - you see the difference is very small between our trucks.
The Pre-runner has a lower final drive than the XR, but the larger tires evens up the final drive ratio.
The chart I posted was a "what-if" you changed the final drive ratio to 3.73 on an XR with 27" tires (stock).

With our super short first gear,,,,,,, a 3.73 rear end would just about eliminate the need for using first gear. You would end up with a first gear that's good for like 25 mph! A 3.42 - 3.55 would be the highest I'd suggest if those ratios are available.

The gears in the differential. The 3.18 ratio means the driveshaft has to turn 3.18 times for the rear wheels to turn once. The higher the number(say 3.73), the more torque will be applied to the wheels(better for towing/acceleration). But the downside is that the engine must spin faster for any given gear at speed which means less gas mileage and more noise.

Agree but i dont think there is a 3.55 gear available until an aftermarket company starts turning them out (hint hint)The 3.73s however are readily available on pre-runners and can be had from the stealership for about 1000 :frown:Yes first will be quick but the benefits in the mid range would be worth it  2nd through forth would just be crazy hard pulling.:rock:If I had the bones I would try to get some 3.73 and see if they will bolt to carrier and locker.Talked to tech who said as far as he knows they are the same 8 inch carrier:dontknow::dontknow:

Going from a 3.15 to a 3.73 won't work unless you acquire a center section housing designed to run numerically-higher gears. Basically, Toyota produced two center housings for the Tacoma, each with it's own pinion bore offset. Most other companies get around the pinion offset problem by producing ring-gear carriers w/ 2 different deck heights, but not Toyota.
FYI, the center section in our X's is the same as the center sections found in the old T-100. So they've been making compatible gears for our trucks for a long time; it's just a matter of getting a housing that will work with different rearend gears.

Remember guys that on todays ECM controled cars and trucks you will have to address that issue also when changing rearend gears.
