How do you get the badges?

I noticed, right by the members name that there are 'badges' 1st gear member, xru junkie etc. How are those awarded or earned?

its based off post count

yep, the gears are 100 based. 1st gear is 100-199 posts, 2nd is 200-299 and so on. Then there is overdosed I believe after 699.
There are also the "special" titles that the staff gives some of the users just for fun.

yes the lucky few get the special names...........just keep hackin away on the forum and before you know it you will rack up the #'s
