The ram was actually very inexpensive for Dominator ram. It was actually less than the G.Skill I was going to get. Also, I've used Dominator since DDR1, along with many other brands, and can honestly say, it was the only RAM I ever had luck overclocking with, and the only RAM that never died on me. I don't mind spending a few dollars more for something I know has worked for me in the past.

As for the luck thing, I don't know what computer god I pissed off, lol. I actually wanted to go X58, but I would have been boned in the water cooling department. I would have to get a whole other block to run X58, not to mention pay for the more expensive triple channel ram. I settled for P55, cause the i7 860 is the last good quad Intel is putting out. Everything else is going to be the 32nm six-cores. I'm sure the six-cores will be awesome, but I won't want to buy until a few years in. By that time rolls around, I'll be ready to buy all new stuff again anyway.

Well, shortly after getting the new board, the ES chip took a big crap. So, I said screw it, RMA'd the Gigabyte board, and built myself a new setup. Everything came in today, here is what I got...

Good job Mike...I could of helped you out:argh::http://www.xr-underground.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=33480

Well, as of Saturday, all finished! Here are the results:

newpc1.jpg

newpc2.jpg

I tried going straight for a 4.2GHz overclock, but it was full of fail. Decided to try my luck at 4GHz and it was MUUUUUUCH better. 4.0GHz stable at 1.275 Vcore, and 1.275 VTT. Tried going lower on the VTT, but anything lower than 1.275 I blue screened. Ironically, 1.275 Vcore was the lowest I could go without failing IntelBurnTest. RAM is at 1600MHz, 8-8-8-24, 1.65V.

Going for 4.1Ghz tonight!

VERY Nice!!!!!! Let us know how the test goes tonight.

I need to start saving my $$ again so I can finally build one. Doing that game room sucked all my play money away.

All I got is the Corsair DDR3 memory......with that said, who feels like donating?

BTW, pink is a great color for you fluffy:biggrin:

I was able to hit 4.4 and stay under 65-68*C on all 4 cores @ 70*F room temp with my uber low speed quiet fans you love so much lol, try to keep the core voltage down (like it is currently) and play around more with the others.

I found that a lot of core voltage really wasnt needed until you wanted to break that 4.4 barrier.

The QPI link speed tends to be the killer of stability, keep it down - it wants a decent amount of voltage as well.

I see that your heat-killer doesn't clear your caps either... watch that brother!

What is your north and south bridge surface temps?

Why is it pink? Dont say Toyota coolant... rofl. Vecte drained some coolant out of his truck as a last resort.

things sure do haul ass in the 4 GHz + arena dont they :-D

What sound card is that (or is it a sound card)?

The heatkiller does clear everything fine, it just doesn't look like it in the pictures. Also, it's crooked because the 775 holes on the board are offset to make room for the 1156 holes as well.

I don't remember offhand what the motherboard temps were. I'll post them tonight when I'm working on 4.1GHz.

It's pink because I like the company of other men! lol j/k. I wanted something different from everyone else, so I went with UV Pink Feser coolant.

Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeMusic

Also, I did all this overclocking with Hyperthreading enabled.

Indeed he did.

More then likely I"ll be going with an AMD processor too.

Any such talk of bashing AMD and I might have to give you a title under your screen name...something like "I <3 AMD"

It's worth $20 if you change DS's title to I <3 MAC.

Honestly, I would go i5 750. It's better than any AMD chip, and only costs $199. Not to mention, you can get a pretty good motherboard for $150, and decent ram for $120.

sure.. why not? i mean an AMD build is basically the only thing that can remotely compete with the i7 that's out now for a fraction of the price.. bought my mobo/cpu combo for a little less than the 920 alone..

first build of a few more than i hope to complete.. if not for myself.. then for others..

DS, what Thermal Compound are you using?

Someone recommended this to me:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7...mond_7_Carat_Thermal_Compound_-_15_Grams.html

I went ahead and bought it because it was around the same price as Artic Silver 5. I have to say, I'm fairly impressed with it. One thing though, the stuff is incredibly thick, you have to boil the tube in water to get it to come out easily, and yes, the instructions actually tell you to do this, lol.

Thats cause AMD is the only other major chip producer .

INTEL = WIN brother

You can build a affordable i7 setup.

I am using the age old classic Arctic Silver 5 brother on the CPU and chipset. I have not used that stuff however, im a lazy shit and I will take a 1 degree penalty to not have to boil it lol.

Fesser coolant is the shit dude - it is damn near the only coolant that cools as well as water and looks bad ass.

Im running the fesser UV blue shit.

Its worth $24.99 to make this Vecte's title.

fuuuuuuuu.......

Oh yea, I don't know if I asked, but what do you use for stress testing?

I use a slew of different apps but mainly - for heat & stability testing I use Prime 95 64 Bit in uber beat down mode.

It runs the hell out of everything, really makes RAM work its balls off.

If she will run a few hours on prime shes good to go.

Ive been running 4.3 now for quite a while with no issues - i found its the best balance between heat and stability.

Anything above 4.4 and core voltage really needed to be bumped - I booted 4.5 with a lot more voltage and a lot more heat during the stress test; it wasn't worth it over 100 MHz.

4.4 ran great too but failed sometimes after about 2 hours into prime, I havnt had a lock up on 4.3 with HOURS of prime abuse.

Oh my child, you need to run Linpack(IntelBurnTest). Set that puppy to 20 passes, 16 threads, and Maximum memory testing, and that will be the harshest 45 minutes your PC will ever experience. 20 passes in Linpack is equivalent to 24 hours of Prime Blend. It really is freaking harsh, it generates 5-10 more degrees than Prime does in it's harshest testing.

ive used that and some other stress tester (i lost it, it was REALLY good for grafx cards too).

My thing is when the hell are u gonna run ur system balls out all '8' cores at 100% for over an hour?

Ive yet to see shit make this processor break a sweat other then stress testers.

I definitely agree that you will never stress your system even close to what these programs do. I just prefer Linpack because it's much faster than Prime.

Also, here is a cheap Intel build that will pretty much rock any AMD setup:
