Black stuff building up

05 x with 111,000k. I just noticed it. It breaks apart pretty easy and wipes off. It's built up around these two valve cover bolts only. OIL??

Yep oil residue.

Most likely coming from the timing chain cover in the area of the power steering pump. Kind of common for it to ooze from that area. You can try snugging the bolts in that area, but might not have much effect.

Might have to live with it unless you want to remove the entire timing cover and reglue it.

Thanks G. Yea, it's not horrible but I was kinda thinking that's what was going on.

Being that yours is an '05 as well, it could be that your valve cover seal is brittle and hard. A new OEM seal wouldn't hurt either.
