URD maf calibrator won't connect

So I tried to connect to my URD maf calibrator to do some running and I wasn't able to get my laptop to connect to it. I used the cable I bought from URD and made sure I had the driver installed but it would not connect to the unit no matter what I tried. Anyone have any ideas of the do and don'ts with this?

Check your device manager and see what com port the device is installed to. You may need to re-designate it to use a com port between 1 and 9 that is not being used by something else.

I am using a serial to USB adapter FYI. Forgot to mention that in the original post.
