Okay, so I've heard this from several sources over the years but never challenged anyone on it. What I've always been told is that Americans don't like hatch backs. We Canadians seem to love them. I would be willing to bet the distribution of Mazda 3s are sold in Canada are 50% hatchbacks as they are 50% sedans.

The claim American's don't like hatchbacks also stands to reason b.c BMW released their 1-series in America as coupe only (in Europe there's a 3 and 5-door hatchback), and Ford canned their Focus hatchback, not before making it a fastback too (3 and 5-door hatchbacks in Europe too). It is also why -I was told- the Chevrolet Nomad Concept was never put into production.

So picture this - a young 17 or 18yr old kid is working at a GM dealership when the Pontiac Solstice is released. He likes the 4-cyl engine, RWD layout because he's into driving, but he needs to cary around more than his school bag. On that same Kappa platform, GM also releases the Saturn Sky Concept and Chevrolet Nomad. What do they make? Two convertibles - Sky & Solstice, and no Nomad. Why? Hatchback.

In the event you haven't figured out already, that kid was me.

This is/was the Nomad Concept, and I still like it. But what is it people? Do Americans truly not like hatchbacks?

Hatchbacks almost always equal front wheel drive which sucks Donkey! Maybe that's why us Americans don't like them? Now give me a SRT8 Dodge Magnum and I'd ditch my XRunner in a heartbeat!

I have never heard that, but now that you mention it your right there are very few hatch backs in the US. I don't like them. You can hide bodies in the trunk but a hatch back you can see right in there.

Not in europe! Hatchbacks to me (originaly from Czech Republic) represent WRC, B-group rally - awd turbo monsters!!!! That can haul a good deal in the boot!
Case in point

To answer the O/P question, i think most of the american (non car crazy going public) looks at most hatchbacks as worthless economy junk! Sad really...

Also not sure how much resonance this vw will gather here but I grew up with them and frankly this one is amazing!
about the 1:39 mark it gets good!

I really like the hyundai veloster turbo, but fwd to me is a downfall. Honestly if I were to get a daily driver (due to a job change) the veloster would probably be it.

I like sporty hatchbacks that have either AWD, or RWD. My fav right now is the CTS-V wagon.

In my eyes a hatchback is a 2 door car with a rear hatch

A wagon is not a hatch. U don't ever hear anyone calling a wagon a hatch or a hatch a wagon it's either one or the other

Oh Dr. Death........owner of the intrawebz, what would we do without you? :dontknow:

If you wanna talk 2dr vs 4dr/5dr then I see a reason for your opinion, but when you compare a 4/dr "hatchback" it's really all the same except for the class the MFR has put the car in. Even Wikipedia shows the similarities.
