No new engine yet. Still trying to get twin turbo GTO back running right. It's going to be such a beast!

Still fighting with Twin Turbo GTO. But should be done soon. Will post pics then.

Still arguing with my self on repairing the truck. Forgot my neighbor (1/4 mile away) is a custom engine builder. Everything from run of the mill car engines, to dedicated 1500 hp race cars. Remembered it when I was actually home one day during business hours and hear one of his cars on the dyno. Had him come look at tacoma. We can see in through the hole in the oil pan. He lead me to believe that the damage was not severe to the block, just the internals and oil pan. Stated that it could be honed or milled and resleved if needed. I was under the impression that something to do with these engines made it impossible to resleve. Am I correct? If it is repairable, I would rather spend the money towards fixing it better then before, if price is similar. Otherwise I will be paying $1800-2200 for engine and $1500-2000 for install.
What do you guys think? Which way is better? If rebuilding/resleving is possible. What forged pistons/rods should I go with that are good, but not price prohibitive? If no rebuild is possible, anyone on here have a deal on an engine? The ones I am finding have 7-30K miles on them and are within driving distance if that helps.

Also realized I never posted what happened. The 4th cylinder piston rod snapped and shot out through oil pan. Hole in oil pan big enough to stick the head of a fullsize maglite into. The remainder of the rod (attached to piston) appears that half of the break line is smooth and the other half jagged. Cylinder wall looks to scratched (0.030-0.050").

That being said, repairable in this engine? Repairable for less than 4k?

That doesn't include labor. Labor is just as much.

Yes. $2400 with labor.

I would pull the engine and inspect it. That way you can get an idea of the costs involved to possibly fix it.

Dezod had a group buy for rods, right now. About $650?

Well... life has kept me busy. But I did get GTO finished up. Twin turboed LS2 (6.5psi) for 625 rwhp. Yes it is a blast, well and scary! But now on to the blown TRD. Mechanic has looked over the engine and we are going to be able to salvage the block! That means the money I would have spent on block, I will spend on forging it. So what piston/rods should I go with? I want good and strong, but don't care about name (unless it means better quality). Besided rods/pistons... what else is in need to strengthing? Truck has TRD blower, URD underdrive pulley, NST pulleys, URD CAI (modified), 7th injector, etc. After longtubes its still making 9.5psi of boost. It currently has a 50 hp shot of nitrous into the blower snout. Nitrous may stay or may go.... still undecided here. But blower is staying. Can't have car making the truck look too slow.

So what upgrades do I need?

What brands are best for a strenth/budget?

You will need new head studs as they are not re-usable.
ARP is the be all end all when it comes to performance hardware
http://www.dezod.com/pd_arp_head_stud_kit-1gr.cfm

A great deal on rods can be found here:
http://www.dezod.com/pd_molnar_techn...rods-1grfe.cfm

Pistons from CP pistons - the anti friction coating is recommended at $60 per piston
http://www.dezod.com/pd_cp_performan..._set-1grfe.cfm

New head gaskets
http://www.dezod.com/pd_cometic_mult...gasket-1gr.cfm

All new bearings are going to be needed as well
http://www.dezod.com/pd-clevite-main-bearings-1grfe.cfm

if you want to push 450hp as a daily driver then you should consider closing the deck on the motor
http://www.dezod.com/pd-darton-modular.cfm

After that its really up to you. I am going through my build as we speak with all the parts I linked to. Only other option I am looking at for this build is stiffer valve springs with ti retainers

Congrats on the good news that the block is good:top: time to build on!!

Thanks for the links. Curious why the lower compression on the pistons? I know in the "LS world" forged parts usually mean people up compression or add insane amounts from other power adder....

Lower compression is safer against knock with high boost,
If staying N/A upping the compression is fine but upping boost and compression is a formula for kaaaa-bbbbooomm

Okay... Thought that was why we forge? How much loss of bottom end will be lost by lowering compression by 0.5?

Forged doesnt mean much if knock is induced.
As for the other I am not 100% on that torspd can chime in I believe he is currently running the setup
