If you can afford to keep the XR, keep it and build a street car. I ditched my X because I really couldn't afford to keep it, build it and get married at the same time and keeping it just wasn't financially logical all around. Otherwise, I might have kept it, atleast for a while longer.
For a fraction of the price of that Stang/Cobra, you can build a fox body and go even faster, for less money and have something thats not as common. I did my research, found which years/models were best for what I wanted. The 89' comes with forged internals, MAF metered not speed denisty, it's a full roller motor which revs high and quick, the ultra smooth Tremec T-5, 8.5" posi rear end, and a 4 link rear suspension set up. All that is stuff that most people pay thousands upon thousands of dollars to ADD to their setup, that can be had bone stock in these cars. Oh, and the LX weighs a whopping 3150 lbs...
I hunted for a couple months before finding a clean 89' LX hatch that hadn't been beaten or overmodded, with working a/c, heat and even cruise control. Dude wanted $3500 and I butchered him down to $2800. Took it straight to the track and ran 13.9 @ 102 mph, launching like an old lady in a stock motored $2800 car. Hope to hit the track agian very soon and see what it can do now.
People that don't know about these cars, just assume it's some crappy 80's beater. Little do they know, they're the greatest foudation there is, with an incredible aftermarket and you can still maintain that element of surprise we all love so much about the X-runner. If you're serious about going fast and don't have a huge wallet, craigslist is just a click a way buddy...
